I am planning to flesh out some Essex figures in the spares box to create a later Achaemendid army and was hoping for some guidance.

How does Warlord's heavy cavalry and close order infantry match with Essex 28mm? Planning 8 extra figures for my Essex Immortals as a unit of 24 Apple Bearers (with hoplite shields) – these are a slight 28mm whereas their Bactrian cavalry are quite bulky.

Has anyone seen the Essex 4 horse command chariot and Great King? Not illustrated in their catalogue.

Grateful any suggestions.

Thanks

Garry

I'd be interested in the answer as well. Those are great looking figures.

The Essex Achamenid archers are quite similar to the immortal/Warlord miniature archers. I was going to mix them, though the warlord games miniatures are superior and a good bit more dynamic. Can't comment on the Essex spearmen though, other than to say the Warlord games/Immortal Miniatures Sparabara are superb.

Many thanks David – I agree, a pack of the Immortal Spearmen & Command Group will do very nicely to pad out the Essex guys. I was also looking at the Battlestandard site -

I do like the Great King in his chariot and I am very tempted by a unit of drepanion wielding Lykians – novelty value if nothing else! Cardaces are not that bad either. Where will this end – too much to choose from!

The Essex Persians are by far one their best ranges.
However the are a bit small to mix easily with bulky Battlestandard Persians.
they match well with Newline Designs Persians and Old Glory

Here some Essex OG and giant BS figures coexist in a Takabara unit based for skirmishing.

Thanks Jeff – I always consult your site on the subject of Persians/Successors.

Propose to use relevant troops (such as foot archers) from my Successors and Pontics and add in specific types. Will even rope my early Minifig Kardakes (tiny chaps). Not sure what to do with Hincliffe Immortals with their violin case shields? Massed levies??

I will keep the Battlestandard infantry in separate units – Kardakes, Lykians and Takabara. Lou has a handy Persian foot Command group and was thinking of using the Greek Command set for the Lykians.

Darius in his chariot will come from Battlestandard.

Cheers

All I can say is that Warlord ancients are generaly true 28mm, so one of the few modern ranges that are true 28mm, if essex are true 28mm, they should work together.
