Which scale do you prefer for your WWII Naval Convoy Battles, and why?

Most likely candidates include:

1/600th
1/1200th
1/2400th
1/3000th
1/4800th
1/6000th

Not a Naval Convoy Gamer

Listed below are some thoughts to consider for the WWII Naval Convoy, and Air Gamer.

I can see advantages to a number of the above, e.g. smaller scales for the really large battles, assuming you want to play those out with 1 miniature = 1 real vessel on the tabletop, and/or for battles with larger vessels supporting or attacking a convoy.

Of course, you can always just reduce the numbers of merchants, escorts, enemy subs, and aircraft accordingly, to make the larger battles a bit easier to handle, if desired, like many do for land and air battles already.

The smaller vessels and aircraft certainly are much easier to acquire budget-wise, quicker to paint, and easier to field on a table of reasonable size.

A complete convoy, at 1:1 ratio, arrayed in formation, would be a wonderful spectacle to behold, in pretty much any scale.

Of course, I tend to like larger minis, since they are a bit more impressive on the tabletop, but the downside is that they cost more, and you need a larger playing area for them. To get around that, you can probably adjust the ratio of minis to real vessels present, if running a large historical scenario, or just select some smaller convoys to game out.

In some cases, it is actually about the same price, or even cheaper, to go with minis twice the size of offerings from other companies (1/600th scale, for example vs. 1/1200th). 1/1200th, while a very nice compromise in terms of scale, is rather expensive compared to the other scales, for merchant vessels, and larger units, e.g. corvettes, destroyer escorts, destroyers, and other larger units.

Going large is fine, if doing aircraft, subs, and a few escort-type vessels, but is especially problematical when you start adding in heavy units, like cruisers, battleships, and carriers though, due to costs and space constraints, and sometimes availability issues (1/600th scale, for example).

Another thing to consider, is the availability of aircraft, if you want to include those as well. For some scales, nice looking planes are easy to find in the same scale as the vessels, e.g. 1/600th, 1/1200th, and 1/2400 (in some cases).

In others, you'll need to go up a size, in order to find suitable aircraft for your battles (1/2400th, in some cases, like German medium and torpedo bombers, 1/3000th, 1/4800th, and 1/6000th scales) – that usually isn't a huge issue, if you assume the aircraft are flying higher than wave-top height, so are larger, since they are closer to the observer. For these scales, you can use 1/600th, 1/1200th, or 1/2400th scale planes, when they are available.

I've even used 1/300th and 1/144th scale aircraft with 1/600th scale naval vessels, to suggest altitude of the aircraft, when conducting dive bombing raids on ships in the English Channel. The effect of the large planes diving on the small vessels below was quite visually attractive.

So, which scale do you prefer, and why?

Another scale used out there in addition to 1/600 is 1/700. Robert

Not a naval Convoy gamer. However, I am a 1/700 scale WWII naval gamer. Believe it or not but many larger ships are as cheap as GHQ ships. I actually have Convoy ships, subs and escorts along with PT's and Eboats but never thought about Convoys or Coastal warfare.

Thanks,

John

My WWII naval is almost exclusively 1/6000 except for coastal, which is 1/1250.

Convoy games 1/6000-1/3000
WW2 the above and 1/2400
coastal I use 1/1200-1/1250
The smaller scales becouse i like 1-1 ratios and play Mal wrights convoy games may fav is the PRE (COA)playtest version of Deadly Waters (I was part of the playtest group) the fast play and depth of detail was simply fantastic, I still think it is one of the best WW2 naval games ever done.
The smaller scale made it easy to buy every ship I would ever need and close to 200 merchies and subs and torp markers etc.
I used 1/1200 scale aircraft for it and visualy it was awsome.
for warship to warship or taskforce action I prefer 1/2400 and GQ3…for coastal I prefer 1/1200-1/1250 to enjoy the detail of the MGBs and Mtbs it did not get trully expensive till i got into the larger destroyers and specialist sloops which had to be bought from like say alnavco (1 hard to find war emergency class DD cost 50 USD)but I had to have her and a few others the figurehead line has some great ship models for very reasonable prices up to a few DD classes I bought every thing they offered a few years back including 3 flower class variants and coastal merchies and the hunt class Destroyer escorts all the UK and german small craft..Some great venders include Scale creep miniatures, Morning Sunshine models, Alnavco the website among others.

forgot to add I use primarily Action stations for coastal warfare

1/3000 – gods own naval scale.

Mako1109 Apr 2012 12:36 p.m. PST

I didn't include 1/700th, since I generally lump them in with the 1/600th scale, and they are reasonably close in size, especially if fielding larger 1/700th ships.

I don't recall seeing many merchants in 1/700th, for a reasonable price, anyway, but the warships are a decent deal, as are the aircraft.

Kaoschallenged09 Apr 2012 12:52 p.m. PST

I use both 1/600 and 1/700 for Naval and stick with 1/600 for aircraft. There are some destroyers and subs in 1/700 That I can use but right now all of my coastal craft is in 1/600 as there seems to be more available in that scale for smaller craft. And thats not including the Paper/Card models I have that can be rescaled to either.Robert

1/600 was the scale used at my old club.
