Imagine that you're organizing an Ancients tournament. Which ruleset would you specify for the tournament? |

Impetus. First, last and always. Better than DB(whatever) any day of the week. Yeah, I'll go there. |

DBA because in a tournament you need things to move along pretty quickly. |

DBA. I would not want to organise a tournament with the battles taking any longer than a DBA one. x42 |

the one with the most enjoyable opponents to play against – which for me is still Armati (a great bunch of guys here) |

I've only ever used DBMM in competitions and since I've been playing I've had a good bunch of games. The opponents have helped. |

If I was to hold a tournament, it would be Armati 2. Although around here, no-one but me would turn up! I do think Armati 2 is the best tournament ruleset out there. I have a feeling I would not be asked to run a tournament around here. Impetus would be my second choice and may then get a few players. |

Armati, I quite like DBA but its too stylised, DBMM is too slow. FoG is too much the province of old DBM players who know the nuances of the rules too well and in FoG nuance counts! So Armati because its a clean set that finishes a game in 2 hours, uses decent size armies, but not huge sop I can have more armies and looks like an Ancient battle on the table! And as was said, nice bunch of players, low stress game. Roy |

DBA, Armati or FoG. But anything really. Any good gathering of ancients enthusiasts transcends the differences between rules sets
Because of the scoring system, a Lost Battles event would be good. And would certainly work. AMW, Impetus, HC
If there is a key, it would be getting the games completed in good time – so I'd more focus on things like using preset terrain rather than, say, FoG's infernal terrain generation
and rewarding nice figures and scenery as well as just bashing the other guy. The rules? They're all good, these days. Phil soawargamesteam.blogspot.com |

Right now, I'd have to say Field of Glory, mainly because it has more players involved in tournament play than any other set of Ancients rules. I would love to see a tournament get organized for Hail Caesar though. It's not designed for competitions, but with a set of lists now published, I see no reason why it couldn't be used. And given its gentlemanly nature, with the right group of players, it would probably be a hoot of an event. Peter C Sword and Sandal Gaming Blog link |

DBA for sure. A friend and I run two DBA tournaments a year at the Recruits conventions in Missouri. DBA Is fast and fun. The tournament runs four hours, which fits well into convention schedules. |

It would have to be a pretty simple game that has little room for rules interpretation. 1) Chess 2) Basic Impetus |
Cardinal Ximenez | 08 Apr 2012 5:49 p.m. PST |
I'm leaning more and more toward the theory that any set is ok but the key being preset army lists for whatever combatants are included. That way results might tend to be weighted on tactical skill and not list building skill. |
