I know it's difficult to determine the colors of something from black and white photos but I was wondering if I could get some help on this.

picture

it's a flight Of Marine corps SBD Dauntless over the Virgin Islands on 3/7/1944, the far plane belonged to a friend's grandfather and he wants to paint up his Dauntless for a minis game in that color but the pic seems so washed out that they look almost white.

I say white or a very light gray for bottom and sides, intermediate blue on top and side of cockpit. Check picture #6 on this site…

It appears to be the Atlantic camo. That would be light gray and dark gray.

The normal scheme for Atlantic Fleet SBDs was dark gull gray over insignia white. I've seen some photos of this scheme with a distinct blue cast that makes the grey look like blue; that may be what's happened with the photo referenced above.

Fourth down from the top. Looks like the exact same
plane as your friend's grandfather's (S5).

In color, of course, and it appears to be gray wings and
mantle over lighter gray fuselage, etc., but it could be
insignia white, as mentioned upthread.

Thanks again, your link told me what squadron that they were in and that led me to this picture:

third from front is S5 again and it's dated 43-44, his grandpa flew out to Norfolk to get the Dauntless' in 43.
