Yes – it was epic and hugely exciting and I quite liked it It was a great popcorn spectacle movie. The 3D was cheesy, but I really didn't mind. Needed more
well you know, but it was okay as an innocent/romantic Disney epic. I dragged Nancy to the theater by main force, because I *really* wanted to see this one on the big screen, and knew it wouldn't last long. She enjoyed the movie, then gave me grief all weekend for keeping her from an important Friday night of
laundry
washing her hair
going to bed early
This is why we see so few movies or concerts or performances of any kind, lately. I *hate* being old and dull. I *will*not* be old and dull. Not y'all's problem, but something has come into focus for me here

Yes – it was epic and hugely exciting really enjoyed it. 3 times now! Screw the reviews! If you are a fan of the books then you'll most likely enjoy the movie. |

Saw it, loved it, don't like the way "the Hunger Games" is being hyped up at the expense of everything else. Sorry, did that sound bitter? |

Other: entertaining. I got my money's worth. Saw it twice. Enjoyed it both times. Marveled at the amount of expression we can get in CGI characters. |

yes -it was good Not epic, but worth seeing . I enjoyed the Tharks |

I enjoyed it and the film was faithful to the spirit of the books. I would even say it improved on the books. It is a pity that it was marketed so badly. Disney could of had a nice franchise for at least a couple of films. The Tharks were very well done although there were a couple of shots with Tharks and humans that failed to work. The movie had a fine cast of veteran actors and the direction was solid. While perhaps not a master piece of cinema, it was good story telling and was fun. I may have to own a copy once it comes out in DVD format. |

Yes – it was epic and hugely exciting and I quite liked it. We saw the 2D version BTW, not into 3D. |

Read the first book, didn't feel like reading any more of them. Didn't feel that they were crap, just not my thing. Saw some ads for the film on TV, didn't feel like going to see it. Didn't feel that the film looked bad, just not my thing. May see it on DVD or Netflix or whatever. May not. Don't plan on seeing or reading anything to do with the Hunger Games. The next 'Dark Knight' installment, and 'The Hobbit', OTOH

Got talked into going with a friend and have to admit I did enjoy it. Not the greatest acting but ok and had enough good in it to make for a fun couple of hours. |

Yes – it was epic and hugely exciting and I really enjoyed it. That BBC article posted by Mick In Switzerland is not a review. He is talking about film industry economics. The author doesn't claim to have seen the movie (and obviously hasn't or when he discusses other past commercial failures, some of which were also critical failures, he would make some kind of comparative qualitative comment
but he can't because he hasn't seen it). To put that in familiar terms, pick a quality figure manufacturer who produces in an era/genre/scale you collect and at prices you can afford. If you read a web site article that said their sales were down, would you say "people aren't buying that brand so I won't either"? OK. Whatever floats your boat. I am probably going to see this movie again. I see a LOT of movies in the theater because I like that better than my TV at home. That said, in the last 10 years, here are the movies I've paid to see in the theater more than once: True Grit (2010 remake) Serenity (2005) The Seven Samurai (Kurasawa revival 2002) The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) My wife saw Avatar 3 times; I thought that was excessive and only saw it once. Anyway, John Carter (2012) is going to join that list. Oh yes, I generally pay for 3D when available and consider it worth it. If you aren't comfortable doing that, well this movie doesn't have any exploitive stabs directly at the viewer so you'll be fine without (note I didn't say it doesn't have things come at the viewer, I said it doesn't do it EXPLOITIVELY.) |

Number 1. Saw it twice in IMAX 3D. But then I've been waiting since the mid-70s for someone to do this movie. I was happy with the job. |
Mako11 | 27 Mar 2012 12:13 p.m. PST |
I wouldn't call it epic (a very overused term, in my opinion), but it was okay. I liked the princess, and the storyline was interesting, but it wasn't something I would rave about. |

I haven't seen it but will be as soon as I can. Disappointed with the 'main stream' media critics. Read the reviews on IMDB from real people who had seen it, much more encouraging. |

No, but not because I didn't want to see it. I really do and hope to see it this weekend. I would think this subject, if any, would be appropriate to have the choice: "No – Needs more boobies" |
SpuriousMilius | 27 Mar 2012 4:17 p.m. PST |
I also can't agree with any of the poll choices. After seeing most of the trailers & reading some of the interviews, I was hoping for a "Braveheart"/"Kevinhood" film: well-made & fun to watch but with no true regard for the source material. That's what I got. The film was in no way ERB's "A Princess Of Mars"--the names remain the same but the facts have been changed to protect the ignorant. |

Saw it and enjoyed the hell out of it! And now I'm going to have to work to make the OFM feel guilty for not going, since he seems to think people have been (even though they haven't) ;) |
Katzbalger | 27 Mar 2012 5:39 p.m. PST |
Saw it with my kids and we all enjoyed it--not great, but not a waste of time, either. Of course, I read all the books back in the '70s so really was looking forward to somebody doing a decent job on the material. Rob |

Yes – it was epic and hugely exciting really enjoyed it. I do understand some of the critics who thought it was confusing. I knew what the story was, so enjoyed it immensely. I'll be buying the DVD. Cheers, JohnG *PS: Often, if a movie is panned by a critic, I think it will probably be good. Movies of poor Iranian farmers daughters, stuggling with the ennui of life usually get good reviews around here

Other – agree it was a large sprawling movie with lots of action, some really enjoyable moments (the Wola scenes being perhaps the best of these), and I enjoyed it – got my money's worth – but – I felt it simply didn't have anything really unique about it due to the glut of CGI movies that have been issued and that's probably why it hasn't gathered much of an audience. Also, how many folks under 25 have even heard of Edgar Rice Burroughs' Barsoomian novels? They probably don't even link Tarzan to that author. |

Yes – it was epic and hugely exciting and I quite liked it. I felt it was a worthy effort that captured the action and tone of the books. A lot was changed or added, but think it enhanced the relatively thin plot line of the books. You have to remember these were early pulp novels, not the sophisticated(?) Sci-Fi we have today. As such I thought the movie was spot on. I am going to see it again and do not usually see movies twice at the theater. |
Weddier | 28 Mar 2012 8:25 p.m. PST |
The movie had a thoughtful script, very good acting from a large stable of accomplished character actors, excellent visual impact, and was tuned to modern sensibilities while keeping the fascination of Burroughs' vision of another world. I'm confident ERB would have liked it. I certainly did. |

YES! Saw it, loved it, would see it again, can't wait to own an extended Blu-Ray DVD version. It has fired up my interest in re-reading the Burroughs novels and re-ignited my desire to game Victorian SF. Plus: Lynn Collins: Wow. |
britishlinescarlet2 | 01 Apr 2012 10:22 a.m. PST |
I don't go to the cinema but will definitely be purchasing it on DVD when it comes out in the UK. It can't be any worse than most of the other dross that has been released in the last few years and being a Sci-Fi freak feel it is my duty to support the genre (even if it is Disney!). |
