I don't know much about either, aside from the causes of wars, participants and outcomes. Which is better for gaming? In the first, I imagine everyone is still using smoothbore muskets, and somewhat napoleonic tactics, but not sure. In the second, it seems the Danes and Austrians preferred shock tactics, there was difference in weapons (Austrians with Lorenz, Prussians with needlegun). However, the first seems more balanced with more colorful uniforms. Has anyone gamed wither war? Any insight into which one offers better gaming? Thanks! |

You need the latest book by Neil Thomas which talks about this war (and many others) then gives a rule set and army lists. "Wargaming Nineteeth Century Europe 1815-1878". Look on Amazon |

Mike Embree has written "THE" go to book on the 2nd Schleswig-Holstein War, with Nigel Smith coming in a respectable second. There is some info on the 1st SW war, but not as covered, at least in English print, to date. |

There is a good book, 'The First Schleswig-Holstein War 1848-50' by Nick Svendsen. It's in English and a good introduction. |

I would go for the 1st war. Chocolate box uniforms for the Danes (initially anyhow) more balenced sides and the Danes get their secret weapon as well. sunewad.dk/espingol_eng.htm Second war seems much more a series of Danes sitting behind fieldworks and trying to blunt the attacks of the Prussians and Austrians. Of course both probably have their charms. Graham |

The First Schleswig War is awesome! You can game it in either 10, 15 or 25/28mm and Ralph Weaver's uniform/ campaign guide is a great introduction to the period. It should be available from Caliver Books. Pendraken in 10mm makes an almost complete line for the 1st War [I think they're missing a few figs like Bavarian artillery but I haven't looked at the line in a while]. |
