The wife and I had a debate about how to cut hard boiled eggs that went on way longer than two people should talk about such things this morning. But the lines were drawn. A call to a third party lent support to my wife and in true losing fashion I must now post here for support.

My wife has mentioned I am not allowed to say who chose what side for fairness.

So when you cut a hard boiled egg in half to sprinkle some salt on it, do you cut it the short or long way?

cfielitz23 Mar 2012 8:29 a.m. PST

Very complicated question because I cut it based on what I am using the egg for. Personally, if I am eating it, I never cut it; I just eat the whole thing at once. But if I did, I would have to go with long ways.

Ambush Alley Games23 Mar 2012 8:29 a.m. PST

The short way. I'm lazy. ;)

Long way.

But no salt.

Unless it's being cut up into pieces for a salad.

Still no salt.

Get enough from the anchovies and olives.

Lentulus23 Mar 2012 8:35 a.m. PST

One of the few foods I am frequently confronted with and really, really dislike. If someone serves me one it heads off to recycling uncut.

John the OFM23 Mar 2012 8:39 a.m. PST

I never eat hardboiled eggs, so I do not have that problem.

epturner23 Mar 2012 8:43 a.m. PST

Long way. Assuming I don't just stuff the whole thing into my mouth. And I only sprinkle black pepper, no salt.

Grizzly7123 Mar 2012 8:48 a.m. PST

No cutting. Just salt and eat.

Mooseworks823 Mar 2012 8:52 a.m. PST

No hardboiled eggs for me thank you.

Rich Bliss23 Mar 2012 8:52 a.m. PST

The only time I cut them is to make deviled Eggs and then I cut the length wise.

I like most methods of preparing eggs but I don't recall how my wife slices them. My job is to eat them. The only eggs I won't eat are the kind with the duck embryo inside-balut.

whill423 Mar 2012 9:18 a.m. PST

What Grizzly said. Just salt and eat.

Maddaz11123 Mar 2012 9:19 a.m. PST

I have never ever eaten an egg cut the long way, all of the slices from my egg slicer (yes I have a machine that does that) are designed to make roughly 7.25mm slices of an egg cut through the shortest axis.

darthfozzywig23 Mar 2012 9:20 a.m. PST

Long way. Black pepper. A touch of salt.

Eclectic Wave23 Mar 2012 9:22 a.m. PST

You CUT YOUR HARD BOILD EGGS? That's just weird.

twowheatons23 Mar 2012 9:30 a.m. PST

If deviled, long ways. If adding to salad, don't care. If to eat as is, whole or cut short ways. The real trick is getting a little yolk with every bite. In any case, with salt and pepper.

CPT Jake23 Mar 2012 9:35 a.m. PST

Cutting hard boiled eggs?

silly.

CeruLucifus23 Mar 2012 9:57 a.m. PST

Mostly I don't cut them, just eat them down the long way. (I try to just use pepper.)

If preparing as a garnish or element in a recipe, I would cut them the short way. This is because I would expect it to hold together better. I do have an eggslicer that works the same way as Maddaz111's.

The exception would be if the recipe specified a different way to cut it, as in for instance, the traditional way deviled eggs are prepared.

Peel and eat, like shrimp. Long ways for deviled eggs.

Hevy Phyzx23 Mar 2012 11:31 a.m. PST

Long ways…if I cut them.

If I am just gonna eat one, I salt the top and bite into it…why bother cutting it.

Deviled Eggs – Lengthwise too.

dip the small end in tabassco sauce and bite it off.
unless the egg is to be devilled, then cut it longways.

21eRegt23 Mar 2012 12:06 p.m. PST

Cut the egg lengthways. A higher chance of equal distribution of yoke and white. Not a big fan of them, but sometimes when camping or traveling it is the best option.

MahanMan23 Mar 2012 12:23 p.m. PST

Scrambled with cheese.

stenicplus23 Mar 2012 12:39 p.m. PST

Just to go against the grain, so to speak, I cut them at 45deg for salads. Boiled eggs for breakfast have to have soft yolks, which of course preclude any cutting what so ever.

John the Greater23 Mar 2012 12:49 p.m. PST

If, on that rare occasion I would not eat the egg whole with seasoned salt, the egg is properly cut long-ways. Only people from Blefuscu cut it short-ways.

Didn't Gulliver have a similar problem in Lilliput?

Space Monkey23 Mar 2012 1:52 p.m. PST

Long ways because I get more surface area to hold whatever I'm putting on them… but mostly I mash them up into deviled-egg salad.

Shagnasty Supporting Member of TMP23 Mar 2012 5:23 p.m. PST

Long ways as it is the only way to be sure.

Now I just quizzed by wife, who is exhausted from a long business trip, and she did what any tired spouse would do – she google "proper way to cut a hard boiled egg."

Turns out everyone so far is wrong – the proper way to cut a hard boiled egg is with dental floss.

Mako1123 Mar 2012 6:56 p.m. PST

Diagonally, for added interest, and in the spirit of compromise.

Of course, I much prefer mine scrambled, so it really isn't an issue.

Captain Lincoln F Sternn24 Mar 2012 3:24 a.m. PST

Depends on what type of egg it is.

Lupulus24 Mar 2012 6:29 a.m. PST

Easily solved. Do a google image search for "egg halves".
Count the number of eggs cut the short way (hint: none).
Case closed.

hetzer Supporting Member of TMP24 Mar 2012 9:22 a.m. PST

If they must be cut, then lengthwise.

timlillig24 Mar 2012 3:11 p.m. PST

I rip them apart by hand.

I also wash them to get rid of all of the yolk, because I can only keep that part of a hard boiled egg down long enough to run to the toilet. I do enjoy hard boiled albumen though.

SECURITY MINISTER CRITTER25 Mar 2012 9:20 a.m. PST

Tiny bit of salt as I bite it to death.

SECURITY MINISTER CRITTER25 Mar 2012 9:24 a.m. PST

the proper way to cut a hard boiled egg is with dental floss.

Before or after you use the stuff??????????????????????

Grand Duke Natokina25 Mar 2012 11:40 a.m. PST

I want Scotch Eggs!

Dasher31 Mar 2012 11:13 p.m. PST

Long way.

J Womack 9407 Apr 2012 8:27 p.m. PST

Deviled Eggs: along the long axis.

Just eating it? Peel, salt and bite, salt and bite, repeating until gone.
