I bought the Ashigaru, I'm kind of curious what I can do with them as far as painting. They're a little rigid looking but not bad overall. I'm smack in the middle of the Lead Painter League though, so it will be a few weeks (more likely months if not years :P )

I have an unopened box of both sets to sell at £12.50 GBP each, if anybody wants them?

Raglan: sure, I'm curious myself and I'd love to paint them up and post a review. That is if you can be bothered to ship them to another EU country and you're ok with PayPal, as it is a bit costly to transfer money to a UK bank.

Paypal is fine and I ship stuff to the EU almost every week.

I started on some of the samurai and am waiting for the ashigaru (tied up with an order of USMC by Defiance Games). My samurai are based ane base coated. mebbe a bit stiff but nice figs. Too many projects ! :/

Are there any pics out there showing how they look next to Perry Samurai?

setsuko27 Mar 2012 7:34 a.m. PST

mgdavey: I'll take some comparison pics when I get the boxes mentioned previously and review them.

These look fairly decent.

These are decently rendered, adequately detailed, and a fair price for what you get in the box. IMHO they're an ideal and affordable way to get a samurai army filled out quickly with the necessary mobs of peasant conscript regulars. The sets include extras like sashimonos, a large unit banner in the spearmen set, a small drum and conch shell trumpets in same, and there's a large resupply quiver and ammo box for the arquebusiers in the missle troops set, as well as an optional arm wielding the laquered bamboo swagger stick/spare ramrod holder for the teppo unit officer.

They're not Perry Brothers mind you, but if you're on a budget and you don't mind building multi-part plastics, they'll do just fine and enmasse will deliver a solid effect IMHO.

Hope this helps!

I got the two ashigaru boxes in the mail today, will do "trip report" when I've put them together and painted them up. Looking forward to it already.

As requested, comparison pictures between the Wargames Factory ashigaru and, from right, Black Hat, The Assault Group and Perry Miniatures. I put the Wargames Factory miniature on two of the bases that are provided as to make them somewhat on the same level.

My verdict is that they look a bit slimmer and more realistic, but that all of them are similar enough in size that I wouldn't hesitate to mix them in the same army.

And at the price point, it's pretty good for filling out all those dang ashigaru levies that a lord was supposed to bring with him!

I think I will have to buy a set or two of those for my 'roleplaying extras' piles.

I think they are great figures, took awhile to put them together. I do think they fit in well with the Perry Figures. I mounted the Perry Brothers Figures on extra WGF bases.
