We just completed our latest school project together, a diorama depicting Gandalf and the dwarves arriving at Bilbo Baggin's house.

picture

It was part of her book report, in which she chose to read The Hobbit. I let her pick the scene and tell me she wanted and I helped her make it happen. It turned into a nice 1-1/2 week long project which I got to teach her and her friends some more wargaming craft skills and paint some D&D minis to boot. We finished it up with one day to spare.

More details can be found here.

Great post. Lots of really helpful tips on terrain building and great paint jobs as well. And congrats to Sydney for firstly picking such a great book for her project and secondly for producing a fab diorama piece (with a wee bit of help from dad!)

That is great, I'll have to remember this when I need to do a diorama project with my son.

Well we delivered CdtKiley's project to school this morning. Unfortunately a small tree in the corner and 1 dwarf broke free during transit. She said only one other classmate chose to do a diorama, most others decided to dress as a character from the book they read. Given that Princess of Mars was on the list of books to read, I hope nobody dressed in that part.

She got lots of oohs and ahhs from her classmates and lots of questions on how she painted the figures.

I told her to tell her teacher to look up my website to see how we did these projects. Also just in case the teacher thinks her daddy did all the work, there's photographic evidence ;)

CdtKiley earned 40 out of 40 for her book report and diorama.

She also came home with all A's again on her report card.
