Hey Folks,

Some may find the survey at the above link of use. I have tried to list all of the current miniature rules that can be used to fight Civil War battles. I hope to compare many of these in a future blog post. Please let me know if I have missed any important rules.

Thanks, Mark

Mark,
The original, "Rally 'round the Flag" by Iron Brigade Games, printed 1978.

Just got my hands on a copy last week through the Market Place.

Stars and Bars by Scotty Bowden? It think it is available in electronic format still?

SonofThor12 Mar 2012 7:42 p.m. PST

Blue Light Manual by Fantasy Games Unlimited. I don't have any experience with the rules but would like to get a copy.

Yesthatphil12 Mar 2012 7:50 p.m. PST

Civil War Battles, RFCM, doesn't seem to be there peterpig.co.uk/cwb.htm

By the way, I found the black on slate lines quite hard to read …

Cheers

Mapleleaf12 Mar 2012 8:49 p.m. PST

Thank you it is a valuable resource but I can only read half of them and guess at the rest

jdpintex12 Mar 2012 9:18 p.m. PST

Don't forget Johnny Reb II as many still play it.

I never liked the changes that went into the latest version and so still play the older version.

The dark grey lines are extremely difficult to read, you could change the text to be white.

One set I recall from my youth are Circa 1863 from Tabletop Games.

Baccus 6mm13 Mar 2012 2:33 a.m. PST

You can add Polemos ACW which contains two sets, one where one base=regiment, the other one base=brigade. Well worth a look!

Is there an official ACW variant for The Sword and the Flame?

Onomarchos13 Mar 2012 4:49 a.m. PST

Nuts, I'm not sure why Blogger changed the background on some of the lines to black. When I made the chart in MS Word, they had a white background. It should be changed now.

Thanks, Mark

Peter,

Thanks for pointing out my omission of Polemos. I don't understand how I missed it … I had it in my notes.

Mark

Onomarchos13 Mar 2012 5:05 a.m. PST

Dave,

I had not heard of 'A Glint of Bayonets' before … I will add them to the list.

Thanks, Mark

You are also missing Carnage and Glory for the ACW Regimental/Battalion level.

Onomarchos13 Mar 2012 6:38 a.m. PST

Hey Doug,

Thanks for pointing out Carnage and Glory … I will add it.

79th PA,

I did look over Larry's site and I did not see an ACW supplement for TSATF … kind of surprising.

Mark

Onomarchos13 Mar 2012 7:03 a.m. PST

Hey Mark,

Thanks for your list … for my survey I'm only covering rules that are currently in print, but I may add a list of OOP rules at some point. I see some old favorites on your list that bring back great memories.

Thanks, Mark

Advance the Colors is still available from Stone Mountain.

Dave

lindrp13 Mar 2012 9:02 a.m. PST

A Glint of Bayonets is essentially TSATF for the ACW.

Ed Mohrmann Supporting Member of TMP13 Mar 2012 11:00 a.m. PST

Uhm, 'Glint' isn't TSATF for the ACW. I've run a lot
of 'Glint' games and while the units are basically
20 figures, the similarity pretty much ends there.

Onomarchos13 Mar 2012 11:58 a.m. PST

Hey Ed,

Got your message on 'On to Richmond.' Concerning 'Glint,' are the figures in the unit individually based or are they grouped on stands?

Mark

C Anders J13 Mar 2012 5:03 p.m. PST

Glint of Bayonets is based on Chasspot and Needlegun. Units are 5 stands of 4 figures each.

FusilierDan Supporting Member of TMP13 Mar 2012 5:15 p.m. PST

Hardtack from TSR

Onomarchos13 Mar 2012 6:56 p.m. PST

Chris,

OK, so basing in multiples for 'Glint,' so it is not really a skirmish game like TSATF.

Mark

lindrp14 Mar 2012 3:42 a.m. PST

Ed is correct, as it turns out. My bad.

John Thomas823 Mar 2012 3:48 a.m. PST

They Couldn't Hit An Elephant is a fun play.

deephorse26 Mar 2012 5:42 a.m. PST

I wouldn't describe Zouave II as generic. They are unlike any other rules I have ever used.

The basic unit is a brigade so does this make them Brigade Level, or are they Corps Level because you definitely need to command at least a corps to have a game?

CATterrain15 May 2012 10:19 p.m. PST

Sixty-one/Sixty-five is a company level game that should be added to your most excellent list of currently available Civil War miniatures games … available as a $8 USD print-n-play pdf too.

‘61-‘65 is from Ganesha Games, the makers of Song of Drums and Shakos (Winner: Origins Award, Best Historical miniatures rules, 2009 – Winner: Silver Medal, Historicon 2009 – Winner: Best Demo Game, Hellana 2009).
