Hi,

After chancing upon Khurasan's 15mm Viking line, I'm considering moving my planned/future Viking Raid campaign to 15mm, rather than 25mm. As I don't have any figures from the period, or any 25mm terrain (but lots of 10-15mm terrain), it would make things much easier to manage. Figure would be individually mounted and fight in mixed warbands with the possibility of equipment changes between raids, so having a large figure selection would also be nice.

After doing a little research here, I came up with the following list of 15mm Viking/Saxon lines:

Khurasan: seems like the top pick – how do they fit size-wise with the following?

Old Glory 15's: seem like good figures to add for variety
Essex: likewise, but maybe scaled a bit different from OG?

Two Dragons, Baueda, Donnington: maybe a bit stiffer than Essex, but scaled to their size?
Feudal Castings: perhaps the roughest/stiffest of the bunch

Did I miss anyone? Any differing opinions?

Also, can anyone recommend sources for 15mm buildings, ships, and general Dark Ages terrain pieces?

Cheers,

Christopher

I have some Hovel Buildings. They are very nice.

And Corvus Belli's figures are nice too.

Donnington New Era are excellent and should mix well with good sized modern 15s (but they are not 18s) link

You might find Splintered Light Saxons would mix in link (I don't have any so I'm not quite sure on the size … they look great in the pictures although edging away from historical, perhaps …)..

Essex are OK but still a bit 'short legged' – the Vikings are now quite old and have been left behind by the competition. Essex being Essex, some people still fan them up …

Each to his own I guess and for me Essex are the nicest – don't overlook their Dark Ages range as well. Essex also sell a very nice Viking longship complete with crew. Two Dragons are somewhat crude to my eye and even shorter than Essex. This could be fixed by putting them on slightly thicker bases. Their Anglo Danish Housecarl wielding a two handed axe is an excellent figure. I have New Era Donnington
Rus and they fit very well heightwise with Essex.

Thanks for the feedback, and for the suggestion to look at Splintered Light – they look like they have some very nice figures indeed, and helpful for more "heroic" leader and skirmish types.

The Khurasan Vikings fit well with OG15 and New Era Donnington.

splintered Light,s Normans are on the way -- cavalry are at the mold makers and infantry greens are done. Vikings will follow, hopefully this year.

Yes, a lot of the Splintered Light Saxons would work for Vikings and I should have my Viking range out this summer. Rod Campbell will begin working on them soon now that the Normans are finished. I do have some ready, including some command and archers and some from the Saxon line will also make appearances in the Viking line along with new sculpts.

That's great news about the Splintered Light expansions, and perfect timing! I look forward to seeing them.

Splintered Light Normans and Vikings sounds awesome

OG and Essex are a good match for Khurasan. Baueda is another company that makes excellent vikings although I'm not sure on the size. But if you mix and match different lines it may not make much of a difference.

I've got a huge pile of 15mm Vikings.

I've got plenty from Two Dragon, but they are much more robust than any other manufacturers.

Also big pile from a UK manufacturer that I can't recall. Bought as big 100 piece (or so) packs of generic Dark Age figures. Could've been falcon. Could've been Lancanshire, although probably not. Don't seem to find any kept emails about them. Will see if I can find some cataloques or something.

I'll try to bring these with me on Monday.

If the system is more skirmish oriented then 28mm might be more suitable. Terrain after all is terrain -no matter which scale it was originally made for you can use most with other scales too…

splintered light are identical in height to baueda and khurasan.

the SL are much different in sculpt from baueda (esp the shields, which are much larger), but as a mix, the height works well if you accept fat and thin body type ranges.

I have 90% baueda with khurasan berserks and Khuasan mounted vikings below

(got all the baueda from vexillia too, excellent service)

The Baueda figures do have a lot of personality, a good choice for a skirmish game with characters. My one complaint would be a slightly crude rendering of mail armour.

Ooh, glad to hear that SLM is coming out with some mounted Normans, the Sherif needs a posse!

David, any chance of a mounted pack for Robin and the boys?
Say Robin with a borrowed spear and shield, the Saracen with sword, and Marian with bow?

Another vote for Splintered Light Saxons, they are head and shoulders above the rest in terms of character, and many would work well for Vikings. Been waiting for their Normans and Vikings for a while…I will be picking some up when they are available.

The baueda figures look as though they would make really good dwarves for a HOTT army. I advised a friend who was doing a dwarf army a couple of years ago to use Two Dragons Vikings which are also quite chunky. He did use them and they look terrific.:-))

ImHo the best mix is Essex and Donnington New Era. There are one or two of the original Donningtons that will mix in too.
