Ahoy! Will crosspost freely to hit the right target experts. I want to paint some inter-war US sailors (landing party) for generic Pulp-type games but still stick to the regulation uniform. I want to paint them in whites rather than blues. I've seen that the turn of the century and WWI-era American ratings wore the white jumper with a light blue collar, but by WWI, this colored collar seems to have disappeared. When did this change take place? The white middie cap also seems to have changed shape at some point, the earlier form was more conical. And when did the blue "Donald Duck" cap cease to be issued? Thanks!

My dad still wore the dark blue Donald Duck cap in the Korean War. I have the U.S. Navy band from it. I think the white ones went away at the same time the blue collared whites did.

I believe the phase out was in 1940. If I recall what I read there was a bleeding of colors problem (blue onto white) and the undress whites became the dress white uniform.

I can tell you for sure it was 1934 when the smaller DD hat replaced the large DD hat of the WW1 era.

The DD hat was still manufactured up to 1962 when it was phased out.

I still have my dad's Donald Duck cap and jumper from W.W.II.

You might like to ask at another forum for US Uniforms and Militaria I am a member of. There is a section devoted to uniforms. Robert

Thanks, all! Great answers and info, despite my typos in the original post!

My dad served in the Korean War navy but his photo scrapbook only showed very modern-style uniforms, no older issues seem to have been routinely worn on his destroyer.

Let he who is without typo cast the first nasty post.

You call them typos, I call them "spelling enhancements"!

My father said they were still arguing about 'squaring the cap' in '43.
