Howdy Gents,

Does anyone know of a book, or set of books, that represent the uniforms of the Allied nations (even as far back as the English Civil War)? Just purchased Elting's Napoleonic Uniforms and it's beautiful, but really has only limited use (French obviously).

Thanks,
Tom Cundiff

Elting – Volumes 3 & 4 have the uniforms for the French satellites, and the Allied armies.

3&4? Didn't know they existed. I thought I purchased the complete set … at least it was so described. Guess I was bamboozled!

Have you not heard of Osprey Men at Arms series of books?

Three and Four in the very pretty red felt style binding will be coming out this year I believe.

There is a lot of good stuff online, Elting has its uses but is pointless for turnbacks.

For somone starting out I would recommend the Funckens' 2 volume set. There is enough basic information there to get you started at a reasonable cost before you decide what you want to specialize in.

I have to agree with Mapleleaf…I have had my copy of the Funckens books for going on 30 years. For someone new to the Napoleonic period these are a must.

I started with Funckens as well – for more specific information I went to the Almark titles next – can still find as used and I believe some have been reprinted.

Just use search term Almark and the nation you are looking for.

The Funcken have a lot of pictures, but the English captions are often poor and sometimes wrong.
