Sitting here this morning reading TMP and I got to thinking about this
We know it depends upon "cost, size, scale, etc..", but overall, what size pirate games do you prefer? 15mm games or 28mm games? |

I would prefer 28s because they look really cool, but I use 15s because they're easier for me to paint and I can afford them. |

15's for ship-to-ship action 25's for land based games P. |

28s. I likes ta see 'em eye patches, arrh! |
Mako11 | 03 Mar 2012 10:35 a.m. PST |
Both! As mentioned above, smaller ships (since they are a bit more affordable, and there's more room on the table for maneuvering), and larger figs for the land actions. The two don't have to be mutually exclusive either, since the smaller vessels can be presumed to be at a distance, making them look smaller on the tabletop (forced perspective). If playing a combined game, place the vessels on the side of the table, nearest the GM, and the players on the other side, to make it seem more natural for the vessels to be smaller (in the distance). |

I recently made the plunge into Pirates. I decided 28mm was the way for me to go. It is going to be a small/side period/project and I'll play skirmishes and small baording actions. I got a couple small ships and some Black Scorpion pirates (regular and undead and a group of Brit marines).
Aaaarrrrrrrr! |

28mm. Got rid of some of my 15mm figs after playing it in 28mm. |

I don't have Pirates, but a good friend does and his are 28's, figures and ships. Great fun playing in games he runs. |

28 I have the old Pirates from flagship loads of fun |
SeattleGamer | 03 Mar 2012 11:59 a.m. PST |
28 for me (well, Black Scorpion, so even a bit larger). I realize 15's are cheaper, and you can do larger battles and all that, but I can't stand painting smaller figures. |

I like the larger 28mm but I sold off most of it a few years ago. Wish I hadn't now. Now I am looking at the Blue Moon 15/18mm pirates as well as Rebel Minis recent offering. With the Old Glory Army deal the Blue Moon figures and ships becomes very affordable. I could run ship to ship and ground actions very easily. Yes 28s have a lot of eye candy but with 15/18s I can run the kind of games I wanted to that 28mm made somewhat impractical given space constraints. |

Now, I do have ships for both scales; about a dozen for 15's and two for 25's with a a bunch a row boats. When I use the bigger ones in a game it's pretty much anchored or in port P. |

I've been slowly getting ready for gaming Pirates done in 15mm. I don't have much room for big ships and big figures these days. Dan |

15s for certain – allows so much more to be done on the table. And there is an astonishing variety of figures available from Blue Moon, Rebel Minis (very new), Peter Pig, Minifigs, Museum Miniatures, Eureka and I think Grumpy as well, perhaps more. And ships from Blue Moon and Thoroughbred, boats from both of those. Buildings and terrain as well. Of course, the bigger toys can paint up pretty sweet. But I'm a diehard 15 (and 18) mm fan. Works well, very well, for me. |

28s. Same reasons as everyone else! sky |

If I want to have 15mm pirate battles I just stand farther away from my 28's. Wingnut

Well, that'd work, until you reach the end of the world with your vessels. However, seeing your large convention Caribbean Sea, and wonderful terrain, I suspect that isn't a problem, much of the time

I have pirates in 10mm, 15mm, 28mm, 54mm, 90mm, and boardgame scale. My current fav is 28mm as that is the project I am readying for Recruits in Lee's Summit. |
Early morning writer | 05 Mar 2012 10:57 p.m. PST |
What's that? There are TWO pirate games in 28 mm at recruits? Really? Or is Lions Den in cahoots with Wingnut? Hmm

EMW, Commodore Lyon's Den is running naval exercises on my table earlier Saturday. He's using a different rule set and his own ships that will join the larger game later. I can't wait to see all four of his ships up close. We are now up to 3 tables 24ft by 8ft and two separate Island location tables for side adventures. Other than the big event, we will be playing smaller games most of the weekend hosted by the GM's that are assisting me. Wingnut |

Getting back to the question Murphy presented
Lyons Den has the right idea. Pirate games are the point not the scale. I would not walk away from any table where cannon and cutlass were the judge and jury of the day. I've enjoyed playing pirates from 1200th to 1500mm (1/1) scale. Pirates are universal, where else can a band of maimed hard luck misfits tear-@$$ around the Caribbean, tanked on rum, shooting holes in stuff, own a monkey, and hunt booty? (Excluding spring break and that trip Cozumel

Murphy: "We know it depends upon 'cost, size, scale, etc..', but overall, what size pirate games do you prefer?" Good point. Those pros and cons have already been discussed to death: TMP link So, IF MONEY, SPACE AND TIME WERE NO OBJECT . . . My answer would still be 15mm. Actually, I'm going for the closer-to-18mm Blue Moon Pirates: link Along with these exquisite opponents: link I've had BOTH 15mm and 28mm pirates before. Back then, the detail on 15mm figures left a lot to be desired, so I invested a lot on 28mm Pirates (it was a huge mix Foundry, Crusader, Black Scorpion, Musketeer Miniatures and Artizan). However, if I was going to do it all over again TODAY, I would have never bought all those 28mm pirates and just gone straight for the 15mm/18mm. Dan PS. And terrain work can impressive for 15mm: TMP link |

A Cahoot!! Certainly not. I once was a cahoot but I got better
I am returning to the scene of the crime with my prize ship captured in the fall of '11. I have mustered a crew (and they resented it) and have built a scenario. If all painting falls in place I would like to host a Satruday AM game on the grande stage set that is 16 Men on a Lead Man's Chest. Details forth coming. LD |

On the order of 15's has anyone painted up those fine examples of ships by Blue Moon yet? Rigging? Sails? Wingnut

Fishbuckle | 07 Mar 2012 4:21 a.m. PST |
Well, I started with 28s and that's where I still am with pirates. It just seems 'right' to me. But then, people will say the same for Zombies and I am quite happy with that genre in 15s
