Whats the the pros and cons for the above scales. I have a smattering of 6mm but nothing major.

I'm based in the UK if that counts for anything!

Looking at doing early war!

I don't think it makes a blind bit of difference to the game, the rules work fine as is with 6mm, 10mm and 15mm stuff. Ranges start to look a bit short for 20mm+

Just in terms of scale comparisons, 6mm stuff is cheaper, easier to paint, store and transport, has a lot more consistency in scale and an incomparably vaster range of stuff available than 10mm. 10mm is bigger if you like to see more detail on your figs and vehicles of course.

I prefer 6mm for all of the reasons Martin gave.

Either will work as well. Really depends on how much individual detail you want to see/paint on the models.

My preference is also for 6mm for the reasons given. Plus, the same figures/bases work for Crossfire, KGN, BC, Spearhead and Assault gun/Megablitz so I only need 1 set of figures/scenery for any WW2 gaming from platoon to Operational/Tactical level gaming.

Ive got armies in 6mm and 15mm(re-tasked FOW).

The game works fine in any scale, if I were to start again though, I would definitely go for 6mm, for all the reasons listed above.

I've gone to 3mm for my next WW2 theatre, that way it feels much more like the scale it is meant to represent because I can put a platoon of tanks on one base. Oddzial stuff is surprisingly well detailed and quite a bit cheaper to get into than any other scale. Works out to about $1 USD per stand.

I was thinking about going into 6mm, but 3mm won for me.

All the above are right though, it plays well in any scale. I have a lot of 10mm as well.

6mm isn't as easy to paint for infantry if your eyes are older ;-)

IMO, 10mm is the smallest to go and still recognize infantry easily.

6mm is cheaper and GHQ and CinC are excellent. I don't care for the older GHQ infantry. Their newer individual pose infantry is much better. CinC infantry is great.

If you are doing both sides and don't have a local group to worry about, decide for yourself by ordering some sample packs in both scales and from multiple manufacturers. If you have a group doing a certain scale, you are better off matching up so that you have opponents even if they aren't playing your desired rules yet.

Oh, and it should be mentioned that if you do scenarios, what size forces are you trying to simulate? For larger battles, 6mm or smaller is it (division size or larger as an example although one would be hard pressed to do a brigade sized engagement in a larger size too ;-)

The only reason that I do 10mm/144th is because Walmart was selling those prepainted tanks several years ago.Otherwise I probably would have done 15mm.

Lentulus03 Mar 2012 4:23 p.m. PST

It really depends if you want an infantry-centric game (10mm) or a tank-centric game (6mm)

There is also the consideration that today is sunday and 6mm is god's own scale.

lol nice!

3mm is an interesting option. I opted for these for WWII. Thinking about the same for modern.

I went with 6mm in the end….

Is there a 'preferred' form of basing? I thought about putting the afv's on 1p or 5p bases but not sure for infantry!

NigelM12 Mar 2012 4:07 a.m. PST

No preferred basing in BKCII, there was a recommended system in the original version;

50x25mm for infantry, and mortars and MGs
30x50mm for tanks and larger vehicles
20x40mm for smaller vehicles (or put 2 on a large base)
40x40mm for guns
40x40mm for HQs, FAO
50x50mm for COs

Intended more for 10mm though.

Couple of threads from BKC forum regarding 6mm basing;

Really you just go with what you like or match what others you play against use.

Crikey! Sure you're not thinking of 2mm or 3mm? Use 2p bases at least.
