I've had the time to visit some blogs today and, as per, I'm trying to leave comments but I've noticed a problem with the word verification – the word simply isn't there. Here's a picture of it
Is this just at my end, or is it happening for everyone? I'm trying to use my wordpress ID as my name, perhaps that's the problem as these web folk do like to make things harder for other product users, eh? |

Blogger has made it excessively hard to post comments the last couple of weeks. They switched from a one word to a two word entry code, and the second word was unreadable because it was covered with an ink blot. they seem to have removed the ink blot the last few days. I'm guessing they are having some teething pains as they switch to some new system. |

Yes, I often have to cycle through half a dozen iterations before I find a combination I can actually read. The new word verification is/was rubbish! |

I agree. Trying to decipher the "new" words in very hard, especially for those of us whose vision has gotten less adaptable as we've grown older (even with glasses). Jim |

I hate having that thing on my blog, but I also hate moderating comments. I want people's comments to show up right away, not the next day when I read the email notifications. Maybe people don't mind moderating comments as much as I fear they do? But Captcha drives me crazy. I have to do as Martin does, cycling through many of them. Agh! ordinarygaming.blogspot.com |

I agree with the Penguin again. I don't moderate my blog's comments nor do I require the sign in. It's easy enough to just delete any spam that finds its way in to the comment section. I welcome comments, good or bad. |

I also don't moderate or require sign in on my blog, and have yet to get a single item of spam; if it happens I can delete it, and if necessary institute the above for a while. I agree the word verification they had a week or so ago was *extremely* difficult; I found it frustrating when trying to comment on other blogs. |

I think I just disabled the verification feature on my site. |

The new word verification. I´m using the thing as a test to wether I can still actually see properly without the need to use glasses :-D The thing Phil is talking about..that there is nothing to type in. Yep, I´ve seen it on a couple of blogs. Reload doesn´t help, nothing. I´m not too sure about turning off the verification thing yet..especially as google has just gone into "open" mode
I´ll wait a week or so and see what the bots/spammers get up to. Cheers Paul |

Aye Paul, in the posted image the words "Visual Verification" appear where there should be something like "DuMb Trou5ERs". Makes it not difficult but impossible. |

Blogger's really getting on my nerves lately. Why can't they leave the things alone, all the constant changes that take weeks to start working properly or at all. I've just had to go over to the horrible new look Design page, after I found I couldn't post pics anymore??? Now I don't know what I'm doing and can't find anything, grrrrrr!!!!! |
Pauls Bods | 03 Mar 2012 1:45 a.m. PST |
Aha! I´m not the only one finding it difficult to post pics!? Sometimes it won´t except the URL´s as being corect..the messasge "URL incorrect etc" turns up and the only way around it is to delete the post and start all over again!!!!!!!!!! @Phil "DuMb Trou5ERs" Cheers Paul |

I'll try turning off verification on my Blog then, see if that helps. And I've been finding it impossible to get pictures to show while editing in Firefox for over 2 months now, it just refuses to upload them. I've been having to use Explorer to get that done, and it works, but its a bit of a chore. |

I guess I've been lucky not having any problems. Google programmers are always fiddling with all their serviced. Called job security. Drives me nuts. I've disabled the verification. We'll see how that goes. Hopefully no problems! |

If you cannot see how to remove it this may help link One other option is to use Discus disqus.com/features rather than the standard comments in Blogger (and WordPress) as it allows replies to comments to be nested under the original comment. It may be easier than trying the inbuilt one for embedded comments link Nice to see Buzz is informative as ever over up and coming changes – not! |

I've been having problems leaving comments for weeks on Blogger. I've enabled the pop-up comment box on my blog as folk where having problems. Seems to have done the trick. My problem on other peoples blogs is when I try to publish my comment; A small drop down box and asks me to 'choose a profile' but the box doesn't drop down and there's no profiles to choose from. I really wish Blogger would stop faffing around and leave things alone. It's bloomin' infuriating!!! |

Been digging around on this as I came across link – this is not a blogger site but uses the same verification and as of this morning has the dreaded ink blot on the second word. Now Captcha is the software being used and following google leads me to the 'Recaptcha' page link that explains why two words are being used. In summary the two words are part of an OCR task for Google books and The New York Times and following the links on the development site gives me: One of the words displayed by reCAPTCHA is from an old book which is being digitized. As such it is not graded -- it cannot. Indeed, occasionally it may be blank, or just a bit of noise. On the word that is checked, the user is (by default) allowed to be off by one letter. It has been found that this increases the user experience while not degrading security by a large amount. This is tuned dynamically based on many factors.
It then gets interesting on the support forum – a few users are complaining that Blogger changed to this newer version with no warning and others are asking how to remove it from blogs. The response from the forum admin is: This is not a 'user complaint' forum. Please direct your ire to the sites you're trying to post comments to/spam.
Interestingly this is where you end up by following the help links through! Sorry to say this does not help but fills in a little of the background to he problem. |

Note this problem can hit WordPress sites as well due to them using a plug-in that calls the same routines. And shopping carts And security based web sites

Well, a little update to my earlier post. The day after I took off all moderation, I started getting spammed with porn links. Luckily they got caught as spam. So I had to turn word verification back on. :-( |

One is tempted to ask how you knew they where porn links Same happened to two others I've been talking with. The only things I have seen are that changing the way the comment form works (embedded/pop up or not ) can help with the blanks as can i.e. 8 rather than 9 but not fix the dreaded spot issue this the code is changed |
