I would like to buy some of the above in 15mm idealy with shelds to the front. I would like the reids and leather effect to be visible.

Can any fellow TMPer suggest what manufacturer they think is best?

ashill429 Feb 2012 11:40 a.m. PST

Essex do them and they have pics on their website.

Lurkio are probably best

Khurasan's Germans with wicker shields are actually suitable

AB's Sassanids from Grumpy are very nice. If you go for the code which includes the globe hat you might want to cut it down to size.

I _think _ the Battle Honors Sassanids are also the same figures due to some complicated history.

How in the world have I missed Lurkio all this time????

timurilank29 Feb 2012 12:12 p.m. PST

The Lurkio Levy have seperate shields and spear, which may can be tediou work. However, looking at the photos, replacing the shield and adding a turban this figure has many possibilites.

To the suggestion of Levy Spear, add Old Glory to the list. I have them and all shields are to the front. The cap is the traditional round hat.

Cheers,

Just right. Thanks Swampster.

Who are Lurkio? Who is the designer at Lurkio? Those figures are fantastic.

what Security Minister Critter and Marcus and jdleonardis said!

They need to advertise!

Can anyone say how big Lurkio figures are ? Essex sized? PP sized?

Slightly slimmer than Essex, I have some of most of his ranges, (unfortunately not painted yet), the cavalry come with legs moulded to horses which means you can vary the figures just by swopping round the top halves. IMHO his command figures are excellent. I've had no problems with mail order, and a prompt turnaround. Highly recommended

PS to the above, I like his Huns best, very imaginative

I have some Lurkio Sassanid Dailami and these are taller than Essex. In the end, though, it is 'all in the eye of the beholder' – if you are happy mixing then mix.

taller than Essex

Damn, they will tower over my Peter Pig Parthians then.

And avoid the globe hat. It was a misinterpretation of a royal crown, and unfortunately – much later (18th Century)Persian peasants wore a 'globe' hat which ahs been conflated. There is no evidence in period of any Sasanians wearing this headgear.

Oh Bugger03 Mar 2012 3:00 p.m. PST

Yes I had read that elsewhere its pretty pretty hard to avoid though.

Has a picture of a Parthian. Period stucco that shows a pear an ith a hat that is pretty well like the globular hat. Not exact, but enough to give a pause before rejecting all the igures with round hats!

Unfortunately most of the illustrations that we have of Partians and their Sasanian successors I are of top people so it is difficult to reconstruct lower class types such as levy , or even professional , infantry. There are some representations and they show chaps with longish hair and no hat. Conventionalised Roman illustrations show Phrygian caps, but they may be heavily influenced by classical ideas of Asiatics…. And then there is this chap with…..a round hat.
So worry not, use the figures that are available,

Oh Bugger01 May 2013 1:35 a.m. PST

Yes I think that's right a good mixture.

That is an interesting image, the way his hat sits on the back of his head reminds me of an old Rasta. Maybe its a soft hat, wool even?

OB….its a fez!
