I have seen Ernst Barkmann's famous Panther (No. 424) modelled in various guises – some with 424 in black lettering and others in red – which is right?! Two other questions, I know that the tank was part of the Das Reich division – apart from the No.424 on the turret and the German cross, did it have any other insignia? Finally, did it have zimmeritt applied to the armour and where? Thanks |

Not sure on the numbering. Supposedly, these were changed in color, from time to time, for security purposes, and/or to fool spies. Most of the Normandy Panthers, if not all, would have zimmerit on the hull and turrets sides. |

Shows his Panther with zimmerit on the entire tank, including the side skirts.
Shows the Panther with Black numbers with a white outline. This site has quite a few photos of Barkmann in his Panther with and without zimmerit. link Das Reich usually had the Das Reich rune on the rear of the tank hull on a fender or on the side of the hull near the stowage of the equipment. It depended on the vehicle and the commander. I've seen both red and black numbers with a white outline – but typically black in the west. |

It is worth mentioning that the famous 'Barkmann's Corner' account is wrong in that the force engaged by Barkmann was a flanking Unit for the main US thrust comprising of a couple of light tanks and trucks. No Shermans and no held up US advance. |

Jovian1. Nice picture, but different tank, or at least number! |

Very interesting, thanks. Maybe just as every German tank was a Tiger, perhaps every Allied tank/AFV was a Sherman! |
