I am sure I've read somewhere, that the US Cav's troops A,B,C etc, all had the same coloured horse, well similar shades anyway. Have dreamt this or is this a fact.

Custer's 7th Cavalry did this not the entire Cavalry.

Some others did at least to some extent. In the 1870's, one troop of the 2nd Cavalry was on grays. Teddy Egan's gray horse troop it was called. I don't remember the company letter. There is a photo of them in a town in the Black Hills.

I believe the dragoon companies were brokwn down by color, but that may be earlier than you are asking about. If you are asking about US cav. circa 1870ish, no.

For Custer: he never adopted the uniform of the US Cavalry!
so I think that it was the same for his horse!
