Just wondered what rule sets people recommend for this war..?, I game in 28mm

Considering the weapons used, size and diversity of troop types….and it's proximity in time to the ACW I would use a modified version of Regimental Fire and Fury. I think that scale of game would be the best to consider as well.

I game it in 10mm and our local group uses our own homemade set of rules but Fire and Fury should work with perhaps some special modifications.

What triple Alliance ?

Martin Rapier27 Feb 2012 6:55 a.m. PST

I assume it means Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil, but it could refer to the other Triple Alliance of Germany, Austria and Italy.

Shipka means Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil against Paraguay. Fire and Fury works with some modest modifications. Regimental F&F works for the smaller actions. I have been noodling around with This Very Ground for skirmishing.

It's a great period. Nice uniforms, that is until the later part of the War when the Paraguayans are essentially in loincloths, and a good mix of weapons. And lots of cavalry fighting mounted with lances.

"Borders of Blood is a well-presented set of wargames rules, specifically for Wargaming the Parguayan War of 1864 – 1870, dovetailing almost exclusively with the War of Triple Alliance figure range by Perry Miniatures.

Rulesets can either offer something so intriguing, inspiring, or unique that they cause you to venture into a new period – think SAGA, Sharp Practice, or Frostgrave – or they offer a service to gamers who are already ‘into' a period or conflict. Borders of Blood is definitely a solid entrant in this latter category."
