I find the whole concept of "trolling" on TMP a bit … strange.

One can get the DH for "Trolling".
One can get the DH for accusing someone of "trolling".
HOWEVER, if I insert the "troll" icon, troll, I am accusing someone of trolling, but it's OK. We even have an official TMP icon for it!

And as far as I can tell from the FAQ
TMP link
we do not even have a definition of "troll".

Grizzlymc26 Feb 2012 2:46 p.m. PST

I dont lose sleep over it, it's hardly a life or death matter.

Needs stupendous boobies!

Mako1126 Feb 2012 2:49 p.m. PST

It could be.

I suggest dueling pistols at dawn, for the parties involved.

darthfozzywig26 Feb 2012 2:54 p.m. PST

Definitions? Not needed for the one person who can change the definition when and as desired.

Except that HornetsNestMinis is currently in the DH for doing this.

Flat Beer and Cold Pizza26 Feb 2012 3:27 p.m. PST

Perhaps the rule has changed then, in which case the troll icon should go bye bye.

Coyotepunc and Hatshepsuut26 Feb 2012 4:01 p.m. PST

I am starting a Troll Mage as soon as my Blood Elf Hunter hits 20th level.

enfant perdus,
I am guessing he used the word "troll" and BIll changed it to the icon instead of snipping it.

darthfozzywig26 Feb 2012 4:38 p.m. PST

Yeah there's a HUGE difference between calling someone a troll and merely using the sanctioned "you are a troll" icon. Huge.

For example, if I were to post that someone should go **** themselves, that would be a DH offense. If I merely show a picture, it's ok.

Edit: aww, my picture done gots taken awayed. Oh well, it was probably less offensive than whatever you're now imagining was here. :)

I am starting a Troll Mage as soon as my Blood Elf Hunter hits 20th level.

Noob.

Edit:

Wait. Is that DH offense? If so, I instead use an image:

And no, I don't care of The Editor likes to DH people for whatever he calls trolling. I just think it's funny that he makes an icon to label people/posts as trolls, but makes a distinction between posting an icon and the use of characters.

Maybe it's DHing for screen inefficiency: the icon takes less space?

Many of the forum rules were born from historical situations on TMP.

One can get the DH for accusing someone of "trolling".

This is because calling someone a troll almost always leads to a flame war. If you think someone is trolling, hit the complaint button and I'll take care of it.

HOWEVER, if I insert the "troll" icon, troll, I am accusing someone of trolling, but it's OK. We even have an official TMP icon for it!

Because who can be offended by a little cartoon! grin (Wish I remembered who came up with that emoticon, I'd give them credit here…)

I am guessing he used the word "troll" and BIll changed it to the icon instead of snipping it.

Correct.

…I just think it's funny that he makes an icon to label people/posts as trolls, but makes a distinction between posting an icon and the use of characters.

What can I say? I like a bit of whimsy. Though, as I said above, I can't actually take credit for the troll emoticon, wasn't my idea…

darthfozzywig26 Feb 2012 4:48 p.m. PST

Can you make the icon an animated gif? Maybe with his arms going up and down and him stomping his angry little feet? That would be pretty cool. :)

If all of life were predictable or consistent, where would be the fun?

John the OFM26 Feb 2012 4:59 p.m. PST

In other words, we have an officially sanctioned way of calling someone a troll.
Why not?

Coyotepunc and Hatshepsuut26 Feb 2012 5:02 p.m. PST

@Darthfozzywig: I am so noob it's not even funny…

skinkmasterreturns26 Feb 2012 5:11 p.m. PST

That little green guy's a troll? I always thought it was the Incredible Hulk. I think I missed that meeting.

skinkmasterreturns26 Feb 2012 5:12 p.m. PST

Oh,btw,this thread needs more noobies.

Sergeant Paper26 Feb 2012 5:21 p.m. PST

It is a visual Haddockism – yes it means they are trolling, but when 'said' in such a non-forceful manner, it passes the whimsy test.

Personal logo Editor in Chief Bill The Editor of TMP Fezian26 Feb 2012 5:24 p.m. PST

Can you make the icon an animated gif?

No, but maybe someone else can?

darthfozzywig26 Feb 2012 5:25 p.m. PST

I was merely using your post in opportunistic fashion, tochli, no offense intended. :)

Sadly, despite years of working in he industry, I feel my actual videogame skills still fall into the noob category. It would be embarrassing if it mattered. 8^D

Pedrobear26 Feb 2012 5:36 p.m. PST

And here I was wondering why people are calling other people the incredible hulk…

Coyotepunc and Hatshepsuut26 Feb 2012 5:43 p.m. PST

No worries…. I find it amusing to be a noob at something for a change…

Cute Fuzzy Kittens26 Feb 2012 6:17 p.m. PST

I like a bit of whimsy

Which means it is nearly impossible to follow the rules since you don't know what they are are.

So all you Bleeped text Bleeped texters and just go Bleeped text yourselves.

LeadLair7626 Feb 2012 6:46 p.m. PST

Hmmmm I always thought it was a naked orc. Guess I missed the boat on that one.

darthfozzywig26 Feb 2012 6:51 p.m. PST

Can you make the icon an animated gif?
No, but maybe someone else can?

No promises – it's a busy week – but I'll see what I can do.

Ratbone26 Feb 2012 7:31 p.m. PST

I demand an animated troll!

I don't even know how to use the icons though so I could care less. I agree with the editor, I enjoy the whimsy.

Mako1126 Feb 2012 8:19 p.m. PST

A hopping mad troll would be entertaining, but not as good as one icon I fondly recall being mesmerized by…..

bandit8626 Feb 2012 11:07 p.m. PST

What is trolling anyways?

Pedrobear27 Feb 2012 12:01 a.m. PST

OK, what if I plan to type troll, but accidentally typed *troll * instead?

As long as we are all clear then, so calling some one the aperture of the rectum is bad, but a cartoon image is fine.

Procopius27 Feb 2012 4:02 a.m. PST

bandit86

Really?

Is that troll ing?

Sane Max27 Feb 2012 4:20 a.m. PST

And here I was wondering why people are calling other people the incredible hulk…

Don't make Captain Gideon Angry… you wouldn't like him when he's angry.

Pat

You cannot beat a nice Goblin

epturner27 Feb 2012 8:18 a.m. PST

Trolling, of course, not to be confused with Trawling… which what fisherpersons do.

Not that Trolls aren't fishing…

Or hiding under bridges.

I'm more concerned about my gaming projects and questions than some perceived insult on the interwebs.
Just ignore it and move on.

I'm not very keen on him when he's not ;-0.

Pijlie28 Feb 2012 4:56 a.m. PST

Is he the guy that gets his knickers in a twist when you say something nasty about Jar Jar Binks?

Sane Max28 Feb 2012 5:38 a.m. PST

yes, and in English that reads like it's been Babelfished, even though he is English Born and Bred.

'Everyone hates Jar-Jar though, don't they?'

Capt Gideon "How dare that you say that about Jar Jar Binks, he was not at least bad like Ceethreepio was Bad."

And also Napoleon.

'Ha Napoleon was short on luck THERE, wasn't he?'

Capt Gideon "Mr Sane Max, don't you talk like that about Napoleon, at least he was not a bad idiot like Mr so-called Wellington!!"

However his true claim to fame is his NSOH issue.

Q- Where do Gungans store their Jam?
A- In a Jar-Jar.

Capt Gideon "What are you on about, there was no Jam in the movie of Star Wars. And if you put Jam in Jar Jar it would cause him some sort of injury. You are an idiot! Like the duke of Wellington!"

If you ever feel like a good chuckle, track doen the 'who would you cast in a remake of 'Waterloo'?' thread, where CG becomes increasingly apoplectic at the ridiculous suggestions.

'Alexei SAYLE? As the great Napoleon? You must be crazy, he is not the right man at all!. 'Rutger Hauer? are you MAD?'

and so on.
