Dear Mike, I'm going to tell you a secret.
I know a Curator or a Museum like this one that is a fanatic wargamer and… when people left the building, once a week he took the models and with a select group of friends, wargame with them.
So, who knows?
Maybe some of these beautifull models ended their days at battle and not only under a glass. (smile).
