As I finally decided my favourite background book ARE playable, I'm looking around for suitable stuff. Figures definitely no problem until I reach the last book and then I'll have to find rather tall bipedal blue furry aliens. But for now the main problem seems to be locating a 4 wheeled armoured car, from the description in the books somewhat like an SF Panhard 90. Actually they call them 'Cadillacs' but they are in fact of Japanese manufacture. The GZG Bobcat would do with different wheels but it needs a crewed turret. The Combat Wombat Scarab is too small, as is the Old Crow Gecko. The latter doesn't have a turret either. Ideally the turrets or the guns would be interchangeable: one a HE 90mm the other a RF 30mm. Any ideas more than welcome! |

Have you looked at any of the WW2 British Armored Cars? A lot of them still hold up in scifi. Daimler and Humber

Khurasan's Locust sounds like what you want.
Another option is to track down a Matchbox Armored Response Vehicle link and add a turret. GZG has some nice little autocannon and grenade launcher turrets available. -Chris K. |

Have a look at Rebel mini's both the Apache and Comanche might suit what you are looking for Clearly not, he's talking more about a Puma/Panhard type, so essentially looks like a tank but with wheels rather than tracks. I can't think of one in 15mm sci fi at the moment, although the closest I could come up with was:
But even that's a gun mount rather than a proper turret. |

So, you are planning on fighting a small colonial war; are you? Try a manufacturer like QRF, they might have Cadillac-Gage vehicles you could "tart up" a bit to use for The Variag's cav. From the descriptions given those should pretty much be useable out of the box. Best of luck to you on this project and remeber to start each game with a rendition of "The Whistling Pig". |

That's probably the best suggestion, as has been shown on this board recently it's relatively easy to take an historical or current vehicle and turn it into a sci fi vehicle. |

QRF do have caddilac Gage. Also french and South African ACs – Try the Roikaat. |

Yes, A Small Colonial War, Fire in A Faraway Place and Cains Land. I must have read these books 4 or 5 times and never tire of them. Anyway, IMHO eminently suitable for a low- level SF campaign. Rules will be Tomorrows War. First the USS security troops and 'cowboys' against the Boers, later the mercenaries as well. AFter the landing of Vereshagin and his troops, the three way battles against mercenaries, 'cowboys' and Afrikaners. Still later the remnants of the 1/35th together with the erstwhile enemies against the Imperial troops. Even one or two small space battles in this. I'll be using Full Thrust for those. Even later still the battles against the aliens. Possibly I'll throw in a few extra battles like the rising of the 2/35th on Esdraelon. Anyway, thanks for all the suggestions. Some really good ideas here! I'm already looking at some of my AEC WWII armoured Cars. Perhaps with a new, more streamlined turret. I seem to remember that Battlefront once brought out a huge AC in their Mid War Monsters range. Going to take a look at that one too. QRF and Peter Pig both do some really nice AC's as well. Never thought of those. Thanks again! |

You can look at something like the AEC:
with something like the BTR-80A turret:
For a very 'sci-fi' look. |

The French armored car by Irish Serb I forgot its designation. |

Or something like link or link with an added turret? |
| clkeagle | 22 Feb 2012 4:02 p.m. PST |
@Streetline – Neither of those vehicles scale well with 15mm sci fi figures, even old ones like Citadel Traveller minis. If the Combat Wombat Scarab is too small, the Javelot will look like a child's car. -Chris K. |

Those books and Pournelles, Falkenbergs stories, are my bibles for near future war gaming. Mainly human vs human, with tech I understand. Mainly light infantry with light armor support to put down those troublesome uprisings, and hope the insurgents are not getting off planet support. Nothing ruins a light infantrymans day like heavy artillery or a MBT showing up. |

Do you guys know how hard it is to design and buy my first 15mm army when you keep showing such cool stuff? |
| Lion in the Stars | 23 Feb 2012 7:15 p.m. PST |
T18 Boarhounds are very cool, but I don't know how many you'd need. You see, Battlefront released them as Midwar Monsters, which was a limited production run.

And I'll just rub some more salt in your wounds with Combat Wombat's Scarab:

Mokawama: I'm not sure exactly how big you want a one manned vehicle to be. If you wouldn't mind sending me some design parameters for what you feel are appropriate for each class of vehicle Ill try to make sure my next line fits into it. As for the original question: I would go with the Micropanzer stoat. |

""The Combat Wombat Scarab is too small" How unexpected." What's unexpected, someone grousing about a perfectly good model, or a one-man scout vehicle looking like a one-man scout vehicle? Looked at a Daimler Dingo lately, mate? It holds two and y'all better go outside to change yer mind:
At least the Scarab is for one (1) person instead of two people crammed together to get all too well acquainted under combat conditions

I would vote for the Old Crow Outrider; it has a V-150ish feel which is what I always imagined Frezza's LAVs to look like.
They look good with turrets, too, as John Treadaway and friends can attest to:
I can't rightly say, but an OC turret as seen above with a selection of CW turned-brass barrels might do the trick, depending on how the barrel in the turret is mounted as-is. |
| combat wombat | 24 Feb 2012 7:15 a.m. PST |
that looks great with that turret. |

Have to clear up something. It's not a 1- but a 3 man crewed vehicle I'm looking for. So far the QRF Dragoon looks the best for the 4 wheeled one. But those Boarhounds look really impressive. Now in the first book there's also mention of a eight wheeled mortar carrying 'bus' I just might try to convert one of those Boarhounds. All in all I need 3 regular 30mm armed vehicles and 1 with a heavier (90mm) gun. However, later on I'll need another 3 90mm vehicles with a Gauss/electromagnetic barrel to represent the newer Imperial technology pitted against the 'old' one from the 1/35th. I have a few left-over 'modern looking' barrels from Critical Games APCs. Come to think of it, the Scarab from CW would be a perfect recce slick. It doesn't feature much in the books but hey, that's what wargaming is all about isn't it? Never saw those Stoats. Beautiful looking vehicle and I will probably add a few to my Sf collection. The twin barrels however make them less suitable for what I need right now, and I doubt I could fit a much heavier single barrel. Love that Outrider too! Another one that goes on the Salute list. Thanks again for all the help guys!

WilleB: I have Rebel minis turrets for my stoats. the top is pretty accepting for about anything you want to try. I have a 1/76 scale boardhound resin model kit that is so cool! never thought of converting it to scifi. CW |

Pat, For the 1/35th Colonial Rifle infantry I intend to use the Critical Mass Recon Infantry. The mercenaries will be represented by a mixture of Peter Pig Hardened Militia and Professionals in their AK47 range. The Boers again a mixture of Khurasan resistance fighters , Rebel Miniatures Post Apocalypse cavalry and PP Professional cavalry. Ground Zero Armed and unarmed civilians mixed with survivalist from The Scene for the earlier scenarios. The Scene Men In Black for one or two assassination scenarios. I still have to get a few more from Rebel Miniatures. Hostages and such. The Imperial Lifeguard Battalion again Critical Mass but the slightly heavier Arc Fleet Rifle infantry. The Manchurians again the ARC fleet Recon troopers but with a slightly different paint scheme, and red/yellow shoulder markings instead of black/white/green. Not certain yet for the Security Troops 'blacklegs' They should in fact be somewhat like the regular Imperial troops but with a slightly different uniform. A simple black trouser stripe won't be really noticeable. Perhaps grey shoulders pads. Or perhaps give them a black/grey camo instead of the tan/green I already did all the others. Or I might buy the Khurasan 'Russian' troops ( any excuse for more figures is a good one) Absolutely no idea for the aliens yet,(tall blue furry bipeds with guns) but I still have about a years' worth of playing time before I get to that point. |
