40K gamers get a bad rap as being a bunch of whiny teenagers hanging around the game store.

So… who on TMP is our oldest regular player of 40? And how do you get along with all the younger gamers? grin

Greenfield Games20 Feb 2012 6:12 p.m. PST

None of the 40K players at my store are whiny.

Awaits Rogue Trader post……with bated breath

Greenfield Games20 Feb 2012 6:24 p.m. PST

I started playing with Rogue Trader…

I don't play regularly, but I do play. I'm 45. I get along pretty well with most of the people who play games at my store. Our current 40K group tends toward the 20+ age group. I get along with them fine.

Delthos20 Feb 2012 6:27 p.m. PST

I'm waiting for 6th edition to get back into it. I'll be 38 this year.

Chef Lackey Rich Fezian20 Feb 2012 6:28 p.m. PST

I've got Greenfield Games tied, but I think I'm a lapsed 40K player at this point. Haven't played the current edition once, and not a lot of the previous one.

Jovian120 Feb 2012 6:32 p.m. PST

I'm 44, and game with 11-70 year olds and I find that the younger players are less whiny and more into winning according to the rules. I find that many older players are way more whiny than the younger players, because they already know everything. I just play, have fun and watch the fire works between young and old when the discuss games. The Rogue Trader era players argue the old line "history" versus the newly heretical line of new "history" from GW. It is nearly as bad as Napoleonic gamers.

GoneNow20 Feb 2012 6:32 p.m. PST

Related, but not exactly what your asking.

The local 40K crowd is mainly USMC in their 20s+.
The oldest player just turned 50 a couple months back.
I don't know if any of them are on TMP, they are pretty GW exclusive.

Mithmee20 Feb 2012 6:45 p.m. PST

I picked up my first 40K miniatures back in 1988. I also picked up Rogue Trader at that time along with Space Hulk.

They were a squad of Marines and a Squad of Eldar. I still hvae the Eldar and traded the Marines around 14 years ago.

By the mid 1990's I had 3 40k armies, Dark Angels, Eldar & Harlequins (they were their own army back then). I also had High Elves, Empire and Orcs & Goblins for WFB. For 40k EPIC I had a huge force of Marines, Eldar and a sizeable force of Squats.

I will be 55 in about 3.5 weeks.

Coyotepunc and Hatshepsuut20 Feb 2012 6:46 p.m. PST

I am a 42-year old 40k player

Ratbone20 Feb 2012 7:00 p.m. PST

Well, I'll be 40 in June, but I know I'm a whippersnapper on this forum!

Mister X20 Feb 2012 7:17 p.m. PST

Mithmee, you beat me by 5 years. I'm 50 this year. I have been playing GW games since 1994. Epic, 40K and Fantasy as well. I have been playing historical wargames more frequently now, but I did get a 40k game in this past year with my Orks.

Personal logo Editor in Chief Bill The Editor of TMP Fezian20 Feb 2012 7:26 p.m. PST

But Mithmee, you didn't say if you are still playing 40K…

PapaSync20 Feb 2012 7:29 p.m. PST

"I picked up my first 40K miniatures back in 1988. I also picked up Rogue Trader at that time along with Space Hulk."

Me too along with Eldar. I turn 55 in april (don't forget to send me presents). I'v played 5thEd a couple of time and can't wait for 6th.

I am months shy of 50, and new to 40k, so perhaps the oldest GW noob?. Not something I would have started, if I hadn't made an extraordinary purchase of a fine starter steel legion army very cheap. 40k is mostly what people play around here, not my first choice, but, better than I expected. May well drop it when 6th comes out, because that is exactly the marketing strategy that kept me out all those years.. Change for profits sake.

Der Krieg Geist20 Feb 2012 7:43 p.m. PST

Started playing 2nd ed when it was first released. Then bought and played RT40K. Went over to 3rd when it came out but canned it after GW put a cabash on my Elesium Drop Army, no exaggeration…..three days after I finished it. The codex power creep and having my Eldar Gaurdians dumped on signed the death warrant.
Tried 4th ed… it made my twitch. Went back to playing house rule modified 2nd ed and still play to this day. I'm 44

Jovian120 Feb 2012 7:55 p.m. PST

I run tournaments and play, as well as teach new gamers to play.

skippy000120 Feb 2012 8:01 p.m. PST

RT and 2nd ed. I'm 59.

Personal logo Editor in Chief Bill The Editor of TMP Fezian20 Feb 2012 8:16 p.m. PST

RT and 2nd ed. I'm 59.

This is not the "oldest person who has ever played 40K" poll!

billthecat20 Feb 2012 8:28 p.m. PST

Which edition, and how do you mean 'regular'…?

I played third edition once…. it aged me 50 years on the spot. But mentally, I am still about 7 of your Earth-years.

Captain Oblivious20 Feb 2012 8:32 p.m. PST

I am 34, and have an older brother who is 44 who got me into gaming. He introduced me to Rogue Trader, and I've played on and off ever since.

Neither of us are whiny, but my 10 year old can be, though I'm getting him to stop.

Ratbone20 Feb 2012 8:46 p.m. PST

Okay, so I guess the initial question was who is about 40 and has been playing the longest and plays with younger players?

Blake Walker20 Feb 2012 9:50 p.m. PST

I've been playing WH40K since Rogue Trader. And I'll be 41 in March. I have friend who will be 69 in June and we play 40K regularly. I guess my friend, Don Cox, is the oldest 40K player I personally know.

But I get along with most 40K players fine. I can't say that about Warmachine, though.

MiniatureWargaming dot com20 Feb 2012 9:52 p.m. PST

I'm 48. I started in 1987 or therebouts, and have stuck ferociously to Rogue Trader all this while, although in recent years, I've played at most once a year (too many other historical games to play) Now, however, I find myself back in with the most recent edition because ten year old wants to play.

I've been at Fantasy longer than that, though. Perhaps as early as 1984. Sticking to 3rd Edition on that one. Got a Terror of the Lichemaster campaign pack around somewhere.

Grey Ronin20 Feb 2012 10:03 p.m. PST

Mmm….52… Have accumalated far too many armies but have drawn the line at finecast! Plastics ruined my goal of dying with own body weight in unpaited figures :-(

I also occassionally load up the old DOS Space Hulk game for fun too!

Mithmee20 Feb 2012 10:08 p.m. PST

"But Mithmee, you didn't say if you are still playing 40K…"

That is true GW had me for many good years but their changes to the game has caused me to not to put any of my models on the table for nearly 10+ years.

But I have added to my forces since then. I now have a sizeable Imperial Guard army as well as Orks and have expanded my Eldar army for 40k. I have also increased my Epic forces as well as my WFB forces.

I am also in the process of stripping and repainting my Eldar.

So while I have not played a game for nearly a decade I have not dropped it completely.

Though I am not a big fan of GW right now and hate what they are doing (I.E. Finecast Resin) now I will not get rid of my mini's.

They can be still useful and 6th Edition is coming out in about 5-6 months.

I even got a copy of the leaked 6th Edition PDF.

Joe Fish20 Feb 2012 10:35 p.m. PST

60. Played since 1997. Know players even older, although none of us stay current on the rules or worry about 'legal' armies. Tau, IG, Sisters, Grey Knights, Chaos LOTD.

Too old for that nonsense.

basileus6620 Feb 2012 11:24 p.m. PST

44 and actively playing. Eight armies collected and painted, plus my eldest (16 y.o)and younger kids (13 y.o) have their own armies too. I play at least once or twice a month.

Martin Rapier21 Feb 2012 3:10 a.m. PST

I wouldn't say I am a regular player (I'm not a regular player of anything) but I have played 40k. I am 50.

Colin Hagreen21 Feb 2012 6:23 a.m. PST

46, regular player, still building armies and making stuff.

Cute Fuzzy Kittens21 Feb 2012 7:02 a.m. PST

Let's see, I'm 45 and play 40K as much as I play everything else. This means, very rarely.

I want to play, have little time, and fascinated by the Necrons and want to ge…

Oh look, big Warmachine models grin

I too played Rogue Trader back when you had to walk to the gaming store, uphill, both ways.

Mooseworks821 Feb 2012 7:58 a.m. PST

I play with 40k models in the 40k universe but with Forge of War and FUBAR rules. 40 for 3 weeks now.

Mardaddy21 Feb 2012 8:17 a.m. PST

47 but despite age still a relatively newish 40k player, only started playing regularly about seven years ago.

Dabbled and was disenchanted with the ruleset twelve years ago, but have been painting since "back in the day" and came around to playing again with changes in rules and friend/player cajoling.

richarDISNEY21 Feb 2012 8:23 a.m. PST

Soon to be 42 and still play occasionally.
beer

Mick A21 Feb 2012 11:56 a.m. PST

48 and still playing current edition. Have played each edition as they were released and looking forward to the next one… :o)

I would LIKE to be a regular player of Rogue-Trader… but all the cool kids want to play 7th edition…
I doubt that my dream of running Rogue-Trader games at the old-folks home will ever come true.
But seriously, although many of us 30-40 year olds here on TMP remember the good old days when 40K was fun and affordable, and some of us (not me) still play the new editions with friends or at the FLGS, it would seem that 'regular' CURRENT EDITION 40K players tend to be on the younger side of things (they can be tricked into believing that the current 40K rules are great, that the prices are acceptable, and that playing to win at all costs with poorly painted miniatures is fun… they have never experienced our alternative universe of 'Rogue-Trader' and all those other miniatures manufacturers and game systems…)
Even if I had a 2000+ point current 40K army, I would NOT play the current rules (or anything except first or second edition despite their flaws)… because a) I don't find the game/rules to be much fun at all, and b) the bulk of current 40K players are uber-competitive social-misfits that I would rather not subject myself to… Now if playing amongst friends (and who doesn't???) why not play a superior rule-set with my miniatures (and one that won't make my army obsolete in a couple of years and require continued purchases of over-priced miniatures and mediocre rules?)…
That having been said, if TMP is still around when I am 85, I will post here to let everyone know that I am still happily playing great sci-fi skirmish games with 28mm miniatures and fun rules.
Besides, when the finecast bubble pops GW will become a video-game company, and the average age of '40K' players will drop to 10. (The video-games will be collectable, of course, and come randomly packaged.)

mex10mm21 Feb 2012 12:03 p.m. PST

I am 43 years old, but the avarage player age in my playing group is 35; So not many kids playing 40K here in Mexico City. I think the younger player in the store is my son who is 14.

skippy000121 Feb 2012 4:07 p.m. PST

This is not the "oldest person who has ever played 40K" poll!

OOPs! The Inquision is taking me away!!!..:)

Crimelord22 Feb 2012 4:35 p.m. PST

I'm 41, played since RT,still play, mostly kill teams for fun. Not a lot of "big games" due to time. But I play twice a month???

SaintGermaine23 Feb 2012 8:47 a.m. PST

I'm 64 and although it drives my wife crazy when I paint in the living room in front of the TV I still play occasionally but not the new stuff. I love Orks. Obsessed. I've played mostly 2nd Edition and earlier. I love the old books with all the fluff and color. My orks I consider Blood Axes although we play fast and loose with either Rogue Trader, Savage Worlds and No Limits rules. So yeah I play on and off but not any of the new official crap. I haven't even seen the resin stuff since at the store that carries it in Syracuse keeps it behind the counter! I usually play with Skippy and he is always springing new crazy crap on me like Planet of the Apes Squads. :)
