Which battle from the English Civil War makes the best tabletop game?

MajorB13 Feb 2012 12:04 p.m. PST

All of them are so interesting. That's what makes ECW such a good period.

Cropredy Bridge.

The battle is actually a meeting engagement. You know, the kind we all game but rarely happed.

Like William says, Cropredy Bridge which, as a meeting engagement means the various commanders get to command mixed forces rather than only left flank cavalry, etc.

Edgehill – untired to trained units different tactical deployments, a to and fro battle……..skirmishers, artillery, dragoons, cavalry charges, cav vs foot, foot vs foot, reinforcements, etc…

Lansdown is an interesting one, basically Waller with weak infantry in a strong position on a steep hill attacked by Hopton with good infantry, both sides having good cavalry. Often thought it'd make a nice mini-campaign all the way from the skirmishes at Glastonbury and Chewton Mendip all the way through to Roundway Down.

Edgehill and Lansdown. Played both a few times, Montrose's battles are also interesting.

I am interested in Edgehill..I have plenty of Warlord ECW figures painted but am having trouble coming up with a gaming order of battle.I plan to use the WAB ECW rules. Any tips would be appreciated.

As many have already stated all of them. With this period you can do everything from a small skirmish to the larger battles. I am working on doing a scenario based on the Storming of Alton which ended up with the Royalist making a valiant last stand in St. Lenard's Church. This a scenario that pits outnumbered veteran defenders against a larger mostly green force.

Battle of Stratton is another one of my favorites as is Cropready Bridge.

The Battle of Montgomery makes for a tight pitched battle that can go either way but historically was won by the Parliamentarians.

One that I would like to game some day is the Second Siege of Newark.

Here you go PTL link

for a more detailed OB, I recommend 'Edgehill the Battle Reinterpreted' (Scott, Turton, von Arni) and the old classic Peter Young's Edgehill.

@PTL1815 I highly recommend purchasing the English Civil War Gaming Scenarios vols 1-3 from Partizan Press and written by Bob Giglio. These provide wonderful synopses of the battles along with OOB as best can be determined from sources. The scenarios are written with Warhammer ECW, Forlorn Hope, For King and Country, and other game systems in mind. You can tweak the scenarios to fit you collection and table size. When possible the scenario books provide the uniform colors, give command ratings for the officers, and lots of other details along with recommendations for number of turns and victory point objectives.

thanks, whitemanticore I will check those out.

Also the WHECW yahoo site used to have a bunch of scenarios that were very easy to figure out and set up for.

Both Edgehill and Naseby are worth a bash

Cheriton! No, no, Adwalton Moor. Hang on, Worchester…

Nope I can't make my mind up. I think the best game I've run is one I made up myself- the battle of Pooping on the Plop. That is to say, the village of Pooping situated by River Plop.

In addition to the other suggestions:
Second Newbury is a good one as the Royalists get hit from two sides; its been a pretty even fight when we've played it.
Winceby is good, and unusual as an almost pure cavalry fight.
Hopton Heath is also good (though small).
And no-one has mentioned Marston Moor, which is pretty even although very large.

Marcus Maximus16 Feb 2012 2:43 p.m. PST

I like the ones from Dexter Ward, 1st and 2nd Newbury very interesting battles and not often refought on the table top………

Crumple23 Mar 2012 2:16 p.m. PST

Has anyone played Nantwich on the tabletop ? , looks to be loads going on .

John Dixon23 Mar 2012 4:25 p.m. PST

I have done nantwich a few times, I think there is a u tube video of the game we did at Salute on Nantwich. The whole Chester campaign of the Civil War are full of great skirmishes, sieges and bigger battles
