If you were to begin a fantasy RPG campaign today, which ruleset would you use?

Dynaman878913 Feb 2012 6:52 a.m. PST

GURPS.

The Dungeons & Dragons Cyclopedia (classic "red box" D&D).

doc mcb13 Feb 2012 7:01 a.m. PST

Still love the old 2nd edition RUNEQUEST.

Princeps13 Feb 2012 7:04 a.m. PST

RoleMaster 2nd edition in a perfect world. However, these days I'd go for Runequest/BRP.

Connard Sage13 Feb 2012 7:05 a.m. PST

Is CoC a FRPG? Or a different genre?

Otherwise. Bushido.

Parmenion13 Feb 2012 7:06 a.m. PST

Dragon Age.

Chef Lackey Rich Fezian13 Feb 2012 7:08 a.m. PST

D&D 4E.

Goober13 Feb 2012 7:10 a.m. PST

Depending on the tone, either Savage Worlds for simple hack n slash, Mongoose Legend for a sandbox design-your-own-world or 2nd edition wfrp if I wanted an out of the box rules set and background.

Tom Reed13 Feb 2012 7:12 a.m. PST

Pathfinder. Been in a game for over a year and I really like it.

SonofThor13 Feb 2012 7:18 a.m. PST

Tunnels & Trolls.

SMPress13 Feb 2012 7:26 a.m. PST

Pathfinder, we just started one last month after a 6 or 7 year break from RPG's.

The Dread Pirate GeorgeD13 Feb 2012 7:30 a.m. PST

There are four I have been muling over.
Savage worlds.
Legends of Anglerre.
The One Ring.
Fantasy Craft.
Really I just have to get off my butt and decide on something.
Cheers.

Henrix13 Feb 2012 7:40 a.m. PST

HeroQuest (not the boardgame). Or perhaps old, pre-mongoose, RQ2. Or Burning Wheel.

But I already have a Savage Worlds and an AD&D1 campaign going, so I'll stick with those for a while.

evilcartoonist13 Feb 2012 7:55 a.m. PST

Savage Worlds

GoneNow13 Feb 2012 8:09 a.m. PST

D&D 4E (Essentials line)

Garand13 Feb 2012 8:25 a.m. PST

Pathfinder. We already have a game of it going.

Depends on the time I had to devote to playing and the group

Either "The Fantasy Trip" or Runequest

With the right group Original D&D

I was looking at "Castles and Crusaders" the other day – curious about it – may have to try that

Angel Barracks13 Feb 2012 8:35 a.m. PST

Elric!

Evil Bobs Miniature Painting13 Feb 2012 8:38 a.m. PST

D&D 3.5

advocate13 Feb 2012 8:45 a.m. PST

Ars Magica. Without too much magic.

Angel Barracks13 Feb 2012 8:49 a.m. PST

Ars Magica had the best magic system ever.

M C MonkeyDew13 Feb 2012 8:58 a.m. PST

Mythic, using Warhammer fantasy as setting

On The Lamb Games13 Feb 2012 9:01 a.m. PST

Legend (Mongoose Publishing), but I'm biased. :)

Ratbone13 Feb 2012 9:05 a.m. PST

Let's see. D&D 3.0 brought RPGs back to my group after years of gap. 3.5 seems to have killed the thing, and Pathfinder has been enjoyed but has not recovered the whole group and the mood.

I'd like to play Warhammer Fantasy because I love the grittiness of it.

However my choice and desire are less important than my player's willingness to play and when willing to play their willingness to try something.

Space Monkey13 Feb 2012 9:15 a.m. PST

BRP with a homebrew setting.
Alternatively WFRP (1~2, NOT 3).

Captain Oblivious13 Feb 2012 9:16 a.m. PST

Savage Worlds. Ran a game for my son and his friends. Picked out Orcslayer (old Man-to-Man/Gurps adventure), re-read first scene, converted, made up 8 characters in under 1 1/2 hours. Every character was unique, and all had a great time playing.

The Angry Piper13 Feb 2012 9:16 a.m. PST

I'm running a AD&D 3.5 campaign now, but our group often alternates with my friend's GURPS fantasy game. Another friend is urging Pathfinder on us, so we'll probably give that a go at some point. I like all the rules mentioned above, so it would be one of those rulesets.

evicatos13 Feb 2012 9:21 a.m. PST

Dragon Roar = giant killer hedgehogs

richarDISNEY13 Feb 2012 9:40 a.m. PST

D&D 3.5.

The Dungeons & Dragons Cyclopedia (Expensive and Rare)

Labyrinth Lord (Free and almost the same as the Cyclopedia)

For a Tolkien fix, The One Ring

Frothers Did It And Ran Away13 Feb 2012 9:46 a.m. PST

I've just started running a Pendragon campaign (awesome) but if I was going to run something more classically fantasy I'd use the new version of Advanced Fighting Fantasy.

MERP, AFF or WFRP I think.

Regards

Original D&D

mad monkey 113 Feb 2012 10:23 a.m. PST

Savage Worlds.
Talislanta 4th edtion.

Only Warlock13 Feb 2012 10:29 a.m. PST

Savage Worlds/Hellfrost Setting

or

The Fantasy Trip/In The Labyrinth

darthfozzywig13 Feb 2012 10:33 a.m. PST

The One Ring.

We're wrapping up a 4e campaign next week, and after a short break will most likely run The One Ring. Really neat system and the first frpg to really "get" and encourage a Tolkien feel in the game.

boy wundyr x13 Feb 2012 10:34 a.m. PST

Iron Gauntlets for a meatier campaign, Broadsword for simpler fare. Either a Sword and Sorcery setting (Howard's Kull), Warhammer setting, or the Dragon Warriors world (an underappreciated setting, game was ok too).

Legends of the Ancient World…
A Melee/Wizard retro rework..

darkcitygames.com

Complete with great pre-programmed adventures..

or Castles & Crusades…
AD&D done the way it should have been done.

2nd Ed. AD&D. Been playing it since it came out. No need to upgrade since. The rules are in the background, and their complexity is part of their charm. The rest is between me, and my players, all telling a fun, and enjoyable story together. Cheers!

cloudcaptain13 Feb 2012 11:21 a.m. PST

2nd Ed. AD&D here too. I make converts of those who find that 3.5 and later tends to be too heroic from the start and dislike keeping up with so many books.

corporalpat13 Feb 2012 11:26 a.m. PST

MERP/Rolemaster. I am running a Middle Earth campaign right now. It is highly modified of course, and for big battles, I'm using TSATF!

Sergeant Paper13 Feb 2012 11:43 a.m. PST

AD&D 1st ed., Chivalry and Sorcery, Bushido, Runequest 1st. ed.

Personal logo martinjpayne1964 Supporting Member of TMP13 Feb 2012 12:02 p.m. PST

Elric/Stormbringer or Runequest (Chaosium versions)

Zyphyr13 Feb 2012 12:48 p.m. PST

Depending on the intended tone of the campaign, I would chose either GURPS or Tunnels & Trolls.

Sven Lugar13 Feb 2012 12:52 p.m. PST

Runequest – preferably the older versions!
But I will admit to a certain prejudice there: runequest.org/rqpast.htm

jerardad13 Feb 2012 3:12 p.m. PST

D&D 2nd or D&D 3.x, depending on which of the two groups I run games for is starting a new campaign.

skippy000113 Feb 2012 5:03 p.m. PST

Palladium Fantasy

CPBelt13 Feb 2012 5:27 p.m. PST

Ok, if I had to choose for a long campaign I would probably use something akin to Fudge or the Ubiquity system (if they did fantasy) because my several year campaigns were more novels than dice rolling games.

For pure dice rolling, I would go with Dragon Age because I hate the linear aspect of anything d20. I'd also sneak in WHFRPG 2.0.

Etranger13 Feb 2012 5:46 p.m. PST

Runequest 2nd edition. Maybe 1st edition AD&D. (Old school!)
