So I'm looking at Sash and saber 40mm.

Now most people would say HEY THOSE TAKE UP WAY TO MUCH ROOM.

Well mabye not with capital letters, but the fact is, a 36 figure battalion in 40mm sash and saber, onlt take up 30cm frontage, compear that to the 27cm forntage of the same battalion in 28mm.

A 24 figure battalion takes up 20cm, compeard to the 18 of 28mm.

So size does not mater in this case.

So really the cost is whats kills you.

If you look at Good Metal 28mm, they cost about £1.10 GBP or £1.20 GBP
So 24 figures cost £26.40 GBP
The same unit in 40mm would cost £37.00 GBP
So it's a good £10.00 GBP more for a single 24 figure unit.
So in a single brigade of 4 battalions, you would spend £40.00 GBP more then in 28mm, so basicly you are loosing two "free" units in 28mm, pr. battalion.

That ain't small potatoes.

But still it's tempting, the only other down side is some holes in the 40mm lines, no landwehr, very little cav, and cav is even more exepcive.

In the US, it is the other way around. Many of the 28mm figures coming in the UK cost around 2.25 and up. Sash and Saber in units cost around 2.25 a figure. Thus, it really is about the same cost for either 40mm or 25mm.

What you need to do is contact Sash and Saber and see what the price per figure if you order by them by units verses single figures.

Especially if you order a bunch of units at one time.

S&S 40mm are a tremendous deal. I have been tempted many times (and probably again at Cold Wars in a few weeks). Terrific for small unit action. You wouldn't need a lot of figs.

Chris ran a 40mm Napoleonic skirmish game at Historicon a few years ago. You might email him to see how many figs he used.

I have 40mm armies for ECW/30YW, AWI and Napoleonics. Both ECW/TYW and Napoleonics are Sash and Saber and AWI is a mix of Sash and Saber and Trident. For infantry I use the same size bases as I do with my 28mm armies. Cavalry and artillery bases are a little larger but not substantially…the 40's are a little tighter on the base but you could argue my 28mm are not tight enough. Can't help you with cost, as miniature ships pointed out the S&S 40's cost US customers about the same as imported 28's. The imported 40's will never be competitive pricewise. I'll be running a 40mm Napoleonic game at Cold Wars in March.

I've fought the same bug but I think I am going to break down and do their 40mm aulu/british line for skirimish.

I've thought about them as well, but the $6.50 USD per cav figure is what did me in. If I decide to go big, I'll probably just go with 54mm plastics.
