My top 5 would be: Celts, Aztecs, Egyptians, Vikings, Romans. |

Not to be too picky, but Vikings and Aztecs aren't quite what I consider Ancients. Romans, Greeks, Egyptians, Hebrews, Chinese. |

Where to start. All of the Germanic, Celtic, Dacian folk. The Romans-especially the period of Late Antiquity. Sassanid Persians. Huns Three Kingdoms China through the period of anarchy in the north. The Hittites Mycenean Greek-again I mainly like the period right before their civilization fell apart. Sea Peoples-somewhat connected to my previous list. Reading my list I see that I tend toward the Mad Max/Conan eras. |

What, no love for the Athenians, Macedonians, Carthaginians, Iberians or Illyrians? The republican Romans, if you believe their propagandists, had a few admirable qualities too. |

I'm not sure I'd be willing to categorise any pre-antibiotic and public sanitation culture as a 'favourite', especially those indulging in human sacrifice, arbitrary murder for the resolution of disputes and mass slaughter for public consumption. I do however have various Ancient Armies which I like, and based on the responses above, that seems to be the main definition of 'like': Republican Roman Carthaginian Macedonian Rome is of course is an endlessly fascinating source of books, films and TV shows. |

| Ancestral Hamster | 12 Feb 2012 7:52 p.m. PST |
Golden Age Athens Bronze Age Trojans Late Roman Republic Mayans Aztecs However, the above is my POV if reading history. If I were to play Ancients, I'd drop Athens and the Mayans, move the Late Republican Romans to the top for army choice, and add Byzantium and Sengoku period Japan. (Which one would be army #2 is mood-based, although I have more books on the Sengoku period than I do on the Byzantines which would make research and painting easier for the former rather than the latter.)
