Chief's post here: TMP link on the new Battle Board: Space Sector has me curious about what others have made at home. What DIY board have you come up with for your own space battles? Please post pics or links to your pics. Thanks!

I've done spatter-painted boards for a local game store – pretty much just a black MDF table flecked with "stars" in a few colors. Slow process, but simple enough. You can do the same thing with cloth mats, or use an airbrush to produce fancier effects. Myself, I was lazy enough to just buy a couple of MKP felt starmats, way back when they were about $20 USD-25 each – those have lasted me over 15 years now.

I ordered a blank felt map from Monday Knight Productions If I remember correctly) and painted stars onto it. The hexes have started to fade in the center of the map. My friend decided to make me a new map awhile back. link

Now that I think about it, my mats are technically Geo-Hex – the name they were going by way back when, before the management change turned them into MKP.

I use a roughly 6x4 piece of cloth with a starfield pattern on it, bought from the fabric section at Wal-Mart a few years ago.

We also have a series of PDFs. We created them using our Fabric Mat Patterns.

We have a wider selection in the fabric mats but we are slowly converting them over.

I will second Monseur Lackey's comments on Geo-Hex; have lasted for years, and treated shabbily at that.

Unless Monday Knight lost the magic touch, and I know Kieran stayed around for a long time, should be good.

Others at the store swear by toothbrush 'flecked' mats, and I have to say, for the price, even with the work, their pretty darn good. ;->=

On the other other hand, CorSec's stuff is BEAUTIFUL, and if we still had the high qual plotter at work…

'Where did all the toner go? Honest boss, it's been a busy month!'

OOoooo. Sweet stuff there. That settles it. I'm going to print out (at the Print Shop) a mat and have it mounted to a poster white board.

Black fitted bed sheet with a starfield painted on it. Used a toothbrush and various paints to flick a spotted pattern. Later used spray paint to create nebulas. The fitted sheet fits tightly on a table that is big enough, but sometimes I need clamps for smaller tables.

I made a modular space battleboard with 6 black foamboard sheets from the Dollar Tree with white paint speckled on it

Cost a grand total of about $7.50 USD and a few minutes painting time. Not fancy, but inexpensive and functional.
