Are you thinking of when Italy was a greek colony or the time of Romulus and Remus, or some of the Italian City States like the Etruscans, Samnites, Apulian…etc?

Check out Osprey Warrior #156. Early Roman Warrior & Men-at-Arms Series Early Roman Armies. The Romans went to war against the Gauls about 390 BC as a Hoplite army. They looked alot like Greek Hoplites even providing their own equipment. Think of the Armies you could build with these figures.
