There's not many figures available for use as player characters in a Zombapocalypse game that have matching zombie versions. I've got such models that Hasslefree & Reaper make & I know that Zombiesmith have a few, but after a player has his Bruce or Ving or Milla figure chomped on by the Zeds, I want to be able to substitute an exact Walking Dead model. Converting a hero mini is the only way to get 1.
IMO, the main factors for a conversion would be the fig's pose (not too "animated") & what's in its hands (removing a pistol from 1 hand would be much easier than removing an assault rifle from both). Then I could go to work maiming it with my Xacto & pin vise.
Have any of you used your coversion skills to make an undead version of Resident Evil Alice (there's 2 or 3 minis of her) or SWAT team dudes, heavily armed survivalists, bikers, urban gangers, etc.?

I have done it for civilians. I purchased duplicate sets of the Super System civilians which gives me a ton of people for my players to try to save or keep safe and the converted versions for when they fail.

If I got one that I really liked and it was hard to zombify I would chop an arm off, maybe hollow out its stomach and add some green stuff guts, or dremel a hole all the way thru, that always looks nice. Dig around making lacerations with an xacto knife and if you can twist the head to hanging down with some needle nose hobby pliers. Then let the painting really zombify it.

Oh yeah dig out an eyeball is good, too. Anyone for lunch?

The only way to have lots of zombies in 'period' dress if you are playing outside the 'pulp era – present' time range.

Removing a two handed weapon is not as bad as removing anything that is up against the body (though rifles and such tend to be in that position). Look for a very open pose. To keep them from looking too active, bend limbs back. They will likely not look right when you do this. That is a plus for zeds (as opposed to other types of conversion).

Missing limbs help a lot. You can try adding a bit of toothpick where the limb is severed to look like bone. Toothpick also looks nice as a shunt if you cut a slice out of the leg between knee and ankle. Skeleton head swaps also are nice – a little liquid latex (or green stuff) "melting flesh" helps seal the deal.

Painted gore and blank eyes are a big help, too. (Yeah, I know, duh!)

Since you will have miscelaneous body parts extra now, give the zeds a little snack to carry around. This can also help hide inaccuracies in the removal of what they were carrying nefore.

On a related note, you can also un-re-animate figures. That is, take a zed, fill in the "gaps" (maybe adding a regular head you have lying around), and end up with a "before". If you get your hands on a cheap bunch of hard plastic zeds, this can be an attractive option.
