OK so I'm a bit behind on this but I'm looking for a book on the Civil War that either covers the war during this year or is about one of the pivotal battles/campaigns of the year. My goal is to read a book for each year of the war. I'm not a fast reader so that makes for the limit. Thanks |

Stephen Sears wrote "On to Richmond" about the Penninsula campaign and "Landscape Turned Red" on the Antietam campaign. They are both done in a very readable style. |

Definitely second the Stephen Sears recommendation; an excellent series of detailed and readable books. |

I've always loved the Bruce Catton trilogy, The Army of the Potomac. For the Union cavalry Stephen Starr did a three volume set entitled The Union Cavalry in the Civil War which is very good. The period of 1862 is in volume one. And for the western theater I'm always drawn to Shelby Foote's triology, The Civil War, A Narrative. I believe volumes one and two cover the period of 1862. |

Try Terrible Swift Sword: Volume Two in the American Civil War Trilogy by Bruce Catton. It covers both Western and Eastern campaigns. Don actionfront.blogspot.com "Who ever saw a dead cavalryman?" |

Since it is the susquicentennial of 1862, I'd recommend the following to cover the Eastern Theatre campaigns of 1862, in the following order: 1) To The Gates of Richmond – Stephen Sears 2) Shenandoah 1862 – Peter Cozzens 3) Return to Bull Run – John Hennessy 4) Before Antietem – The battle of South Mountain -JM Priest 5) The Landscape Turned Red – Sears 6) The Fredericksburg Campaign – Francis Augustin O'Reilly That is a lot of reading in one year, but each of these books is very readable and you will sail right through them, especially the Cozzens book. |
