Ok, so I've read through the new books, and I can't find the answer to my question anywhere! (Unless it is blatantly staring me in the face, and I just can't see it)

Forces are comprised of Warbands, but I can't find anything that says warriors and their leaders have to stay together during the game!! So: Do warriors have to stay within a certain distance of their leader, or can they go off and do their own thing? I mean, if they can, I don't see the point in creating warbands…. OR am I being completely oblivious to something that is completely obvious!!??!!

Cheers
Ryan

I've not seen the new books but my understanding is that it's an army selection thing, not a unit coherancy thing.

Haven't seen the books: is there really much difference between the warband concept of today, vs. the point value system of yesterday?

In an offline discussion, one savvy player speculated that it might be necessary to correct some balance problems with certain LOTR SBG point armies. Apparently Legalos+Haldir+60 Wood Elves is a killer army. Forcing more heroes corrects some current balance problems and sells more wonderful GW Finecast.

From what I read, it does not impact scenario players.

There are slight changes to some of the points for certain models, but it's just the fact that if you're putting warbands together, shouldn't they be acting as warbands in the game. If they do or if they don't isn't really a major issue, I just thought it strange that there wasn't a definite description of whether they should stay within a certain distance of each other (for example, like in 40k)!

You don't need that many heroes to be fair. My 500pt High Elves force has 3 heroes (Glorfindel, Haldir[as part of an allied contigent] and Gildor, and each warband doesn't even have the maximum of 12 models in it.

It also effects deployment for the "standard" point match scenarios.

It does limit the mixing ratios of various armies. I.e. no more than 12 dwarves per dwarf hero; no more than 12 elves per elf hero; no more than one hero per warband, etc.

As far as I can tell, once bought and deployed it has no other effects.

And here was me hoping that it would influence the way the game plays. Ah well, my local GW has mini tourney on Saturday, so we'll see how things go then grin

You might want to read the sections on Courage and Heroes again. While you could certainly scatter your warband to the four winds, they won't benefit from the Stand Fast rule, Heroic Move, Heroic Fights or Heroic Shooting that your Hero brings to the table. Those only affect models within 6" of them.

If you're playing an evil force with a shaman, Fury is a fantastic spell that also has a 6" bubble. There's also the 3" bubble provided by banners, too…

Twilight, I am aware of those rules. But there isn't anything stopping you from moving your troops away from each other! I completely agree that it is beneficial to keep warriors near a hero, but I was posting the question due to the new "army organisation" rules. grin

This is one of the areas where I thought Warbands would matter. Things like Banner rules on apply for your warband, warbands "break" and test courage as a unit, Heroic actions only affect warbands, etc. I have played a few games in the past where my group tested those concepts out. But so far no dice.
