I want to put together some armies for Black Powder, in 10MM or 6mm, or maybe both. I was wondering what would be the best basing for them? Zulu, British, ACW, Boers,Prussians etc. 19th century armies is what i'm looking for colonial, ACW and European. Thanks for any help you can give me. |

For 6mm Anglo Zulu War I have gone for 30mm frontage bases – 1 rank/6 Imperial figures on a 30x15 base, loads of Zulus on a 30x30 base. This tallies with the Baccus/Polemos system where units are 60x30. We halved all the move distances

Hi Joe; I have done 10mm FPW for Black Powder. I really like the "massed" look you get with the smaller scales. My troops were based for Volley and Bayonet orginally, so I used 3"x3" metal bases, with 20 figs on each base, including a flag bearer, drummer and officer. I also based groups of 4 or 5 to a much smaller base (1" x 1.5") to use for skirmishers. When you are playing big battle games like BP, you need units that look big. I would think that 6mm would paint up quicker, as I seemed to paint my 10mm like they were 15 or 25mms Good Gaming; Joe |

I use 1" square bases instead of 40mm. and then measure in centimeters instead of inches. |

Depends what figs your using. If their on strips, work with that. All the snipping isnt worth the trouble. |

Hi I use the Baccus 60x30mm bases for regular troops for the mid 19thC period [FPW/Franco-Austrian/Austro-Prussian etc] and my regular Zulu war British. 2 ranks of 3 stands of figures per base [3 ranks would look good too but I wanted the figures to go further!]. I use 2 bases per unit [again 3 would be better but needs must!] My Zulus are based on 60x60 bases which gives a good warband visual effect. Skirmishers for both go on 30x30 bases. I know some people have based these on the main stand in front of the regulars but I wanted the option to field stand alone units of Jaegers, Bersaglieri etc. I'm going to be basing some of the Baccus Samurai for Black Powder and plan to do all of these on 30x30 which will also allow me to use the Peter Pig Samurai rules |

Depends on how much work you want to do, how much time you have and how much space you have. If time, space and/or money is an issue, then go with the 1" square and put 6 figures on each base. Otherwise, go with the bigger bases. They will really look the part! |

For my ACW armies I have used 20mm x 20mm bases with Baccus 6mm miniatures 2 strips to a base, 6 bases to a unit. My 6mm Napoleonics are based in 60mm x 30mm bases 6 Baccus strips to a base two bases per unit. Both basing systems work for me, but I have found the 20mm x 20mm bases are more flexible for formation changes and smaller/larger unit representation. |
