Well after going to williamsburg muster I have got energy to start some allies for the 1809 campaign. As I had a relative from the past that war born in Obergude Hesse (sorry if it is incorrectly spelled) in 1779 and died in 1840s I am going to take a guess he served since his father was a Grenadier. I have seen one tmp post with hesse darmstadt infantry being created with Ab Prussians which look the part and great for 1806 and 1807 campaigns. However as the poster noted the backpacks were not the right style for 1809. I was looking around and I was wondering if I bought bavarians or even 1812 saxons who seem to have the correct backpacks and same style uniform if with a head swap they would pass for hessians?

I know I would have to buy both 1806 prussians and Bavarians or Saxons to recreate this corps but it was very small so not a huge deal. Please correct me if I am wrong because if I am way off with the uniform I will just use the 1806 prussians. I am also going to make a Bavarian division oneday since my other half of the family seems to be from there and I had a relative who served in the 30 years war as a staff officer. I think I will get the lasalle rules as I like Shako II but I want a smaller game to start off with.

Thank You
Michael

Sorry didn't mean to crosspost to media. If anyone has any great books other than John Gills Book which I have I would be grateful.

This is not anything like primary sources, but a UK bloke on eBay was selling 28mm Hesse Darmstadt units that looked exactly like Saxon or Prussian bicorn heads on Bavarian bodies (Foundry I believe). They looked just right. I was thinking of bringing out the dremel and doing the same.

I'd recommend the Lasalle rules.
Cheers

Thanks I decided to buy just some 1806 prussians and some 1812 saxons and see what it looks like. However, the more I look at the 1806 prussians the more I like their uniforms and feel like I will stick with them. I have read Gill's book and he says that 10 men from each company were schutzen. Would these be all armed with rifles in the fashion of most german states or the rifled musket?

Sorry for all the question but if Ludwig my ancestors father was in a grenadier regiment would his son most likely when he served be put into the same regiment? I think if I can find the regiment I might have a guess on where he could have served.

1806 Prussian schutzen were armed with rifles at 10 men per company.

I know there 15mm figures, but check out Paul's blog for 1812-13 Saxons and look under Johns 15mm for some of my 1806 Prussians.

Thank you. I think I decided to use the 1806 prussians for my Hesse Darmstadt 1809 army even if backpack style is not correct. The uniform just looks to nice and I think the color combinations are some of the best. By the way your prussian fusilier battalion looks great I have always wanted to recreate the battle of Saalfeld with the Lannes corps vs the saxons and prussians under Prince Louis.

This guy is probably the chap you were talking about; he's done the entire H-D force, including horse and guns:-

Yes those are Greystreak's/Bryce's figures, which he did an excellent job painting. But he has moved on to bigger and better things, like 28mm Russians.

I have been doing more research and I found a picture which shows the hesse darmstadt in 1806 uniform with the fusiliers wearing white crossbelts. However, looking at the historie and collections wagram book it shows the fusiliers with black crossbelts. Anyone know which would be the case for 1809. Almost all the pictures I have show them in white.

@Marbot,

For what it is worth I too have only seen the fusiliers with white belts. I also seem to remember that they swapped their green coats for blue ones in 1809.
