I'm trying to find some good pics of what army uniforms looked like around 1890 or so. Anyone know of any good examples? I tried googling and found all kinds of mixed info, nothing really concrete enough.. were they still like civil war style uniforms? or more like WWI uniforms? Something inbetween? Any good sources out there?

Something in between. If you google the Frontier Army Museum, at FT Leavenworth, KS, you can get in contact with them and they are pretty much the experts.

They understand wargamers. Some of them are.

I was able to go "behind the scenes" whilst attending the Military History Instructor's Course and if they can't tell you, no one can.

Try googling pictures for the Spanish Anerican War. The answer is something inbetween the Civil War and WW1. For a good overview check out PDF link

They were still wearing blue, as khaki didn't see real use in the field until after the Spanish-American War. They would also have pretty much switched to the drab campaign hat. Webbing would still be black.

Sounds like you're doing some research around the time of the Wounded Knee Massacre in 1890, Necros.

despite the impression from movies. Infantry units escorted more wagon trains than cavalry units. Wagons moced at a slow pace and the infantry did not require the massive amount of forge that a cavalry unit required. So the kepi for the infnatry was a common headgear during the westward expansion.

There are Ospreys on both cavalry and infantry in the Indian Wars.

You can also check out paintings by Frederic Remington for this later period. He shows the transition to the Montana-style campaign hat & the webbed cartridge belt. The uniform in 1890 is almost like what was worn in the Spanish-American War.

Good link 'Gew Words'. It shows the 1872 forage/kepi cap issue. This was used by a lot of infantry units and even some cavalry troops.

Cool, thanks for the info. I always liked the idea of a retired military guy wearing his dusty old civil war coat full of bullet holes, but I decided to make the setting for my game be more around 1890.. didn't think there'd be too many people still wearing them so many years later :)
