No a question about how many on how big a base, but rather how thick/thin a base can I do?

I finally got around to open up the many blisters of individual figures from GHQ to work on them.

I would prefer to mount them on thin metal bases, but that would be hard to pick up on the table, which means I have to handle the figures directly. Or I can put them on the 3mm plywood bases from Litko, which I hope they can be picked up by holding the base itself and not the figures, but that means the figures will have their height boosted by almost 50% and I have to mount the vehicles too just to keep everything at the same height.

So what should I do?

Personally, I would do the Litko base thing.

oooh 3mm bases are very thick compared to the men.

For squad style basing I use 1mm steel bases and pick them up by the figure.*
Varnishing the figures stops any paint coming off and being careful stops anything from breaking.
As you say having men that are on such thick bases will look unpleasant to many.

*in fact no matter what size bases I pick them up by the figures.

Also no matter how thin the bases I mount all my vehicles to keep them at the same height.

I have used 1.5mm bases and I am not happy with picking them up by the figure. I just don't trust those fragile legs to be handled by others.
I'm switching to 3mm.

Go with thicker bases after some one snaps a few figures off even a sincere apology wont make ya feel better. Save the thinner bases for you solotare units that you alone use.

I split the difference and use 2mm laser cut MDF from Rathbone Games. Very impressed with the quality. I agree the 1.5mm plywood bases are difficult to handle but I am bit clumsy!

Actually I had an idea of putting 4 figures line abreast on a 1" x 1/2" thin metal base – kinda like 40k Epic infantry – and this way picking them up by directly holding one of the middle figures won't put any sideways force on the figure that might bend them.

warbases produces 2mm bases.

I cannot pick up thin metal or wood bases, so those are out for me. I think you should use what you can pick up comfortably without damaging the figures.

I use 1.5 mm ply bases which end up around 2mm thick by the time I have based the figures with sand or grit.
If you are putting on magnetic bases they would be even thicker.

I personally think that 3mm + bases "swamp" 6mm figures.

I would mount everything on bases.

I base on 3mm bases for exactly the same reason, to preserve the figures. It also seems to help with the barrels.

I always use thick bases, I can't pick them otherwise with he bloated sausages attached to my hands which some people call 'fingers'.

Artists mounting board with magnetic basing underneath. At least 3mm. I also edge them in black to frame the figures/vehicles. Works for me.

Kadavar07 Feb 2012 5:20 a.m. PST

I use thick card (off the back of notepads)with magnetic basing stuck underneath. By the time you add any basing material its thick enough for me.

But as others have said, its all depends on whats thick enough for you(and others you play with) to easily grasp.

Upside down FOW small bases. Easy to pick up.

Lentulus07 Feb 2012 1:43 p.m. PST

3mm ply – it looks thick in pictures, but I find I don't notice it looking down at the table.

2mm Rathbone games ones, look and work great.

I use US pennies

I base 6 mm infantry directly on thin steel paper. Vehicles are not based, except for towed guns and trailers and motorcycles. Estethics first!
