Hi,
just picking the 'experts' brains.

For my next Ancients painting exercise, I fancy a Galation army based about the invasion of Greece.
I've collected together a LOT of naked celt models for this project, and I imagine plenty of conversions with captured Greek weapons and armour.

I see plenty of wonderful Celtic armies at wargame events, but never any Galations.

My question is this, can I get away with 'painters' liberty by painting my whole force as fanatics, plus to keep it different, give a large % of figure captured Greek equipment?

Thanks

Weren't the invaders of Greece well armed and fully clothed by then?

Livy has the Galatians still fighting naked in 189 BCE, 90 years after the invasion of Greece.
Cheers
Paul.

The fighting naked thing was my assumption too, hence the project (although I may start to look a little odd at this point!)

Yes I have a few of the Foundry naked Greeks to add to the mix.

Any suggestions for figures are welcome?
So far I've got,
Foundry
Warlord
MDS
Gripping Beast
Bits and bobs of other stuff.
Some plastics too, thrown into the bag.

I'm thinking a core of close order warband supported by chariots, and maybe some Greek light troops as allies?

Not sure about a 'large %' of captured Greek equipment, at least in the 279 BCE invasion – eg the Galatian shield became a pretty common piece of kit amongst Hellenistic armies, not so much the other way around – but then the odd Thracian or even Corinthian helmet would help make the hordes even more diverse (and they look cool as well).

Old Glory naked Celts aren't bad either.

Cheers
Paul.

Black Tree Design has some nice Celts, some are naked. Plus the naked Picts would also work if your ok with full beards.
