Despite gaming for over 40 years, I've never collected adecent WW2 force of any size, so I've decided to take the plunge this year.

Russian front and Hungarian 2nd army in 15mm is the chosen theatre and scale, mainly because the costs are much less.

Can anyone tell me which FoW books cover the Hungarian army ?

"Grey Wolf" for 1944-45, "Eastern Front" for 1942-43, currently no lists for early war though that might change when the Barbarossa book is released.

So the "Eastern Front" book covers the Stalingrad campaign – yes ?

Yes. It has Hungarian special rules and 3 company lists:

Armoured company
Motorised light infantry company
Rifle Company

It should!

Would Hungarian Infanty look the same for all three periods? If so that would give Guthroth a lot of period flexability if he went that route.

That's my next area of research.

Having troops that I could use from Stalingrad to the fall of Budapest would be a real bonus !

If you're interested, at least one Hungarian infantry regimental group also fought on the Western Front, against the British, in 1945.

"…at least one Hungarian infantry regimental group also fought on the Western Front,…"

Can you elaborate? Thanks

Yup, identified as Battlegroup 'Kolotay' by 53rd (Welsh) Division intelligence (from prisoners), they were encountered on 12th April 1945, during 53rd (Welsh) Dvision's assault crossing of the River Aller.

Battlegroup 'Kolotay' seems to have come uder the command of the German 2. Marine-Division.

While their defence of the Aller was unsuccessful, with 65 Hungarians being captured by the 1st East Lancs, the Hungarians rallied and put in a fierce counter-attack against 7 RWF at Hohenaverbergen on Friday 13th April. This attack was accompanied by flamethrowers, Spandaus, 'bazookas' and showers of rifle-grenades. The Hungarians succeeded in overrunning 7 RWF's 'D' Company and encircling 'C' Company, before a renewed attack was mounted by the rest of 7 RWF which finally restored the position.

Thank you very much. Very interesting. As one of my best friends is a Welshman I may well have found our next scenario.

@ RMD….great info, thanks for posting.

My painting guide FWIW, though I've done barely one platoon and some HMGs: link

RMD, can you give a source for the events you describe ?

It does explain how the last Hungarians to surrender did so in Denmark, but I'd be intruiged to find out more.

The topic is mentioned in the Div History of the 53rd (Welsh) by Patrick Delaforce:
Red Crown and Dragon: 53rd (Welsh) Division in North-West Europe 1944-1945

I did wonder at the time as had never heard of such before and its nice to see my fellow Celt RMD mentioning the subject

Very cool! That would make for a fun scenario with an interesting force for the Western Front.

What GNREP8 said! I also got some info from the 7 RWF history and the 7 RWF War Diary and Int Log, though a mate of mine borrowed it all some years back and never gave it back, so I can't check! :o(
