Hey yall, I've been wanting to populate some RP games (as well as some decent looking proxies for games like warhammer) and I've been wondering on how to get a good number of generic fantasy/medieval humans? I've been thinking my best bet would be to get some wargames factory dark age warriors and maybe gripping beast, they looks the part well. I'm also looking at perry WotR sets too for more higher grade humans. I'm curious though to know if they'll match up well? Maybe even some part swaps?

First if this is for Role Playing games remember that there are about 40 figures in a box of those manufacturers' plastic minis. Not much for mass battles but a lot for role playing. I have made the mistake of expecting GW 10 figures a box and then getting 40 it makes a mess of painting schedules.

That out of the way. I think Wargames Factory and Gripping Beast mix reasonably well. Perry is defiantly a later period although for fantasy I happily mix them. The Perry 'Bows and Bills' box gives a large spread of armour types for back ground people cloth through to full plate but is limited in weapons. If I was starting out with role playing it might well be my first choice for back ground people.

My current Warhammer Empire army is mostly Perry WotR.

I hope that helps.

If you go with true 25mm figures, there is so much to choose from… Hat, Italeri, Orion, and many more. Here is a web site to drool from, uh, I mean select from:

They are extremely affordable, compared to metal, and you can even find fantasy races such as Dwarves, Elves, Orcs, and Goblins, if you look at Caesar miniatures (typically 35 figures, for around $12 USD + S/H -- check e-Bay for deals). Caesar miniatures even has a set of Adventurers, which includes a Troll-like figure:

There are so many types to choose from, but you really want to pay attention to the size of the figures, as listed in their reviews, as they vary from 23mm to 25mm, which will be a bit noticeable, if you stand them side-by-side. Personally, I don't let it bother me, but some folks might not care for it. Cheers!

I Really like the Reaper Men at arms and Anhurians. They make good generic fantasy humans and come in enough different poses to be useful.

Ditto to what leidang said, but Reaper figs are a lot more pricey than plastics.

That sounds like a feature not a bug (if you shrunk me down to 25mm height, my brother would be about 23mm).

As a follow-up, how do the various 28mm historical plastic miniatures compare to fantasy miniatures?

I'm guessing that compared to the very large Reaper and GW miniatures (many of which are 30-32mm or larger) the historical plastics appear much smaller.

That may not be a deal breaker for me. The Gripping Beast plastics and Perry WotR Look great.

I haven't found any comparison pictures yet, but if you know of any, please share the links. Thanks!
