I am interested in starting a collection of ACW and possibly Napolewonic models to use for Black Powder. I love the period. My question is; would you spend the money to purchase both armies not knowing if anyone locally is interested in playing? Therefore leaving you with tons of models that serve no purpose? Or would you just go for it and be happy that you have tons of models that serve no purpose? I am leaning towards just doing it anyway, but I'm a little on the fence.

You are correct to raise both sides. You can invite folks over, take the show to a convention or just play out a few scenarios solo. Plus, you have the fun of collecting the units.
And finally, if you tire of them they can be sold off (popular period) to fund some new venture.

i'd say go for it.
if you have no players nearby you can still share things by showing pics/progress on TMP etc.

Why would they serve no purpose?

You can always play one side or the other as you don't always have to only play one side even though they might be a favorite.
You bringing figures and rules kind of guarantees you will get to play something you are interested in. And doing so you might convince some others to get into the period.

Do what makes you happy.

Thanks for the quick responses, you have convinced me. I will be spending a few bucks later this month. When I have some painted I'll post some pics. I'm already getting excited!!

Even when I have partnered up with someone locally to do the other side, I invariably end up doing both sides anyway. So, if you enjoy it, you might as well!
