I've picked up some WWI 1/300 tanks and infantry. I haven't painted or based them yet, but wondering what rules would work well with them for mass ground combat. Wasn't sure how to base them to begin with – was thinking 8 or 10 to a 1" x 2" base, but will wait to see what rules suggestions pop up. Thanks!

Great War Spearhead would be a great set. Stands are companies.

Square Bashing by Peter Pig.

Both use 30mm x 30mm bases, a good choice for ww1. I am far too cheap to put 10 figs on a base! 4 to 6 is plenty.

My favorite set of W.W. I rules was called "No Man's Land". 2 to 3 batt for attack and what you wanted for defense.

For that scale I second Square Bashing. Sure can produce some interesting games, as do all the RFCM rules sets.

If looking at 1 base = 1 company type rules than another honourable contender is 'Playing Leapfrog' by Realistic Modelling.

The toys are interchangeable between all the 1 base = 1 company sets (GWSH, SB and PL) and all of them work for Div-Corps sized actions.

There are some lower level sets out there, but the basic currency of WW1 was divisions, not platoons.

With cunning basing you can use the same stuff for lots of different levels, I use mine for everything from 1 base = 1 section up to 1 base = 1 battalion.

FFOT3 has WWI rules, I think. (don't own them yet)

Thanks! I'll take a look at those.

I agree with Martin about the number of figures per base. You will find that 5-6 figures per base is more than enough. This will give you more bases in total, which is what makes a battlefield look more impressive IMHO.

For Great War Spearhead, check out Robin Sutton's site – The Great Adventure (Google 'Great Adventure Sutton'). He has put up a super scenario generator on the site as well.

Watch out for WW2 rules that have been rebranded for WW1. Very often, the ground scales / unit frontages are completely wrong. Although it is frequently held that late WW1 was like WW2, there were fundamental differences.
