Did the SYW Austrians carry, in addition to the knapsack, a canvas ration bag? Everything I've consulted says the SYW Prussians had this additional bag, but the Austrians? The guides I've consulted regarding the Austrians say no--but I found this at a link from an earlier TMP post (from Greenwood/Ball?): "The equipment was standard for European Armies of the period, consisting of a brown fur knapsack, a leather water bottle and a canvas 'ration' bag…."

Confused….

I have the same question, because there is a suggestion of such a bag on the Old Glory 15's. The Ospreys do NOT show such a bag, and Ottenfeld's pen and ink darwing in the Osprey shows Austrian equipment with NO such bag.

The Greenwood and Ball booklet is a bit old. Paintings in that booklet show Hungarians wearing shiny black boots up the mid-shin, looking like rubberized pull-ons. Later illustrations – and the Old Glory 15's – have them in high-top laced shoes coming up just above the ankle bone.

I have just been painting their left hip "back pack" as one color only, no bag.

For the Croats by Old Glory 15, I am considering painting that looks like a ration bag in red, as for the folded red cloak so popular with those troops. the figures are all excellent, and all wearing the fur "Opanken(?)" with leather strapping.

Interesting, GdeP. Grateful for the comments. My problem is slightly different. The new plastic 54mm (my favorite size) SYW Prussians from Hat would work great for SYW Austrians but for the canvas ration bag--and the sword. The latter can be removed, no problem; the ration bag is a different story; they would require some heavy cutting--unless of course the Austrians had them, too, as this one source seems to indicate.

Anybody have any other thoughts/comments?
