Did the Ottomans employ any of their Janissary Ortas as melee Heavy Infantry? I'm asking this because I think evryone has seem this link , but I could'nt find many other references about janissary heavy infantry…

Donnington have a figure just like the guy with the axe. Thought they where just meant to be officers. But i don't see why they couldn't 'tool up' for an assult.

Definitely. Not enough of an expert to tell exactly when the wearing of armor stopped, but certainly in the 15th and early 16th centuries it (armor) was available for issue at the start of campaigns (the ortas drawing special gear and weapons either at the start of a campaign or maybe from orta stores during, when an assault was envisioned…).

armor was worn for sieges apparently.

Very interesting. Was armor still available for infantry at the XVII Century?

Apparently they did but, like all things with Janissaries, it was really an individual thing, more often than not, so there were not distinct bodies of armoured men primed for melee. From a gaming perspective I've always thought that was best handled with the melee men being part of the larger masses of men with bows or later firearms, and giving them a slight boost in terms of close combat capability, which most games already do.

What about melee weapons, did individual janissaries choose whether to use swords or polearms? And did all the janissaries carry a musket?
