Has Russian film THE SOVERIEGN'S SERVANT whet your appetite for more movies set during the Great Northern War?

(a) Yes. We need more GNW on the big screen!!!
(b) Unsure.
(c) No. One movie more than enough.

If you are depending on Hollywood, good luck.
In case you have not noticed, movies that cater to wargaers are not high on their list.

Just FIY,

There is a Soviet made TV series called "Young Russia" about the period, culminating in Swedish naval expedition to a northern port of Arkhangelsk. Also, there are 2 films – "Young Peter" and "Beginning of great deeds". All made about the same time, early 1980's. Big production value, but no major battles. Not sure if available with subtitles.

Yes, we need more on the GNW!

The impact of movies/TV coverage/exposure is, to my mind, a very significant factor in the popularity of periods for wargaming but then what films are popular depends a lot on the cultural/historical tradition of the gamer's home country (and that too has a bearing on the language of the film)

A bit of browsing on You Tube can soon lead to the realisation that there are a lot more films set in a lot more historical conflicts than than the English speaking viewer is aware of.

Even so, I suspect the GNW is not very well covered

Yes. And we also need more Cowbell. evil grin

Is Sovereign's Servant available with subtitles in English?

flooglestreet05 Feb 2012 12:46 a.m. PST

No, we really need a star studded Darrell F. Zanuck epic with a cast of thousands about the War of Jenkins Ear. Mike Tyson could star and for scenery we could use giant repros of paintings by Vincent van Gogh.

Then we can have stuff about the Great Northern War, the Crimean War and Zardoz.

nazrat05 Feb 2012 8:02 a.m. PST

No, and, what's the Great Northern War? Never heard of it before.

Yup…

A – and this goes for every historical period, with a war or without. For example, I'm really surprised there are not more Civil War movies done here in the US. American Revolution movies released in my lifetime I can count on one hand. War of 1812 is unknown, and anything older then 1776 pretty much didn't happen.

spontoon05 Feb 2012 9:40 a.m. PST

Lot's of 1812 movies, but they're usually horrid! What's that one with Yul Brynner?

The bucceneer

That one predates my time though. I do remember seeing it as a kid and liking it, although I agree that it is not a GOOD movie. Any since the late sixties?

I forgot about the two Romans in England movies out lately, but I'd like to see one that is mostly historical rather then mostly fictional.

ciaphas05 Feb 2012 12:54 p.m. PST

just starting out in this period are there any?

Sure. Why not? I did a presentation on it in grad school.

Der Alte Fritz, the DVD is available with English subtitles, but as far as I know it is only available from their website slugagosudarev.com
I picked up this DVD from them about 2 years ago, it took about 2-3 weeks to arrive in the UK.

Definitely. A good history of the war in English (that doesn't concentrate on Poltava) would be a godsend.

Lee Brilleaux Fezian06 Feb 2012 8:36 a.m. PST

I have called all my film industry contacts.

Would you prefer the version set in Los Angeles with the Swedes serving as night club bouncers between battles (Paris Hilton will do a cameo scene) or the Bollywood version with singing and dancing?

I may be able to get Matt Leblanc for Charles XII.

Also, we'll delete all references to anything called "The Great Northern War", because the producer's trophy wife didn't like the name.

You ARE aware that Hollywood is a business, right? That the whole purpose is to make money?
Yeah. Do a spectacle about Napoleon and make no mention of Austerlitz or Waterloo.

'Romans in England'

Horrible anachronism…

Don196206 Feb 2012 11:59 a.m. PST

Mexican Jack … Matt LeBlanc? I think today's audiences would rush to the theaters to see Orlando Bloom playing Charles XII. Johnny Depp would make a fantastic Peter the Great.

If Hollywood filmed the Great Northern War the dastardly British would lose…
