Sorry, schwimmwagen! How widely were these used, and what type of units operated them? (Yes, I know, German ones – let's get that out of the way)

Schwimmwagens were commonly employed by Heer and Waffen SS panzer & panzergrenadier battalion HQ's or battlegroups with 3-man reconnnaissance teams. They were especially useful of course where there are waterbodies that need to be crossed.

As has already been said, they generally filled the role of HQ recce/liaison – essentially the same place in the orbat where the British used Humber Scout Cars. However, there were some recce units that used them:

1. Panzergrendier regimental Recce/Motorcycle Companies (where they existed) often had them, where they replaced or supplemented the motorcycles.

2. Panzer recce battalions also often used them – they either replaced motorcycles in each company's liaison section, or in some cases they even replaced halftracks (due to a lack of halftracks).
