The 2012 Derby Worlds will be held at Castle Donington International Exhibition Centre, Derby, DE74 2RP on 6th/7th October 2012.

This change in venue is a result of Derby University's decision to no longer hire out the University for external events. A popular long running antiques fair has also been forced to find a new location.

The International Exhibition Centre has a slightly larger floor area than the combined parts of the University and will enable the show to be more compact and importantly all under one roof. There is a canteen/restaurant and a bar – so breakfasts and lunches will be available. The bar and canteen areas are currently being refurbished with completion for the start of Donington's season in March 2012. This will complete a major refurbishment of the Exhibition Centre.

There is unlimited free parking and easy access to the motorway network.

We will have a similar mix of trade stands, competitions, demonstration and participation games and re-enactment societies as before, but all under one roof.

Same great show just at a new venue.

It doesn't look particularly easy to get to by public transport?

Captain Swing03 Feb 2012 4:06 a.m. PST

Walk from Castle Donnington (outside Donnington Park) reckon 17mins by Travelline.
Either from Derby or Nottingham Skylink buses.

Not the easiest place however for public transport.

Not quite as bad as it looks, but no, not ideal for public transport – best bet from the north seems to be train to Derby, then the Skylink bus (half-hourly service) from the station forecourt to Castle Donington and a 20 minute walk from there. I think I'd need to be feeling fairly enthusiastic on the day, but it doesn't rule the show out for me.

Hmm, there's a bus stop outside Donington Park, which the Skylink *does* pass, and would cut 3/4 off of that walk. Might be worth someone local checking if it does request stops as well as what's on the timetable….

Jeremy Sutcliffe03 Feb 2012 7:16 a.m. PST

I'd need to know of reliable/convenient public transport.

Derby is about the limit of my there and back in a day patience.

AnthonyWB03 Feb 2012 7:21 a.m. PST

The venue is good though, transport issues aside, I used to attend Toy Fairs/Antique Fairs there as a dealer and did about a dozen shows per year there from 1992 to 2003.

Although to be fair I have not been in there since the renovation work a couple of years ago, hopefully its made it even better as a venue.

The Skylink drops off and picks up at the entrance to Donington Park.

I've checked with the bus operator.

Skylink runs Leicester-Loughborough-East Midlands Airport-Castle Donington-Derby and the reverse. Donington Park is between Castle Donington and the airport.

This change in venue is a result of Derby University's decision to no longer hire out the University for external events.

They must be making more than enough money from their tuition fees then.

damm, i liked the uni venue. easy to get too, easy to find, easy to park, light, airy, open, and the multi level of it made it feel muxh bigger but still freindly

1815Guy03 Feb 2012 10:51 a.m. PST

Yep, Uni was a great venu, and I bet they change their mind for next year when student enrolment drops in the Autumn…..

But CD might be just as good, and even easier to get to if you travel by car. Or if you come from overseas via EM Airport.

Derby show is a key highlight of the year for me, so I will deffo be heading there.

I look forward to this show each year but travelling the A38 once a week for work takes some of the enjoyment out of the trip.

At least I do not have to face the McDonalds roundabout.

NigelD. make sure comprehensive travel info goes on the website when the time is right.

Prefer the university.
Will have to see how the new venue stacks up.
Being so close to the airport I hope its not too bad to find.
It will mean another 15mins on my journey, which makes it a longer trip.
A strange decision by the university, thats for sure.

Phil Gray05 Feb 2012 2:21 p.m. PST

hmmm

Rats – its 17 minutes walk whether you go to Derby or Long Eaton to catch the bus there…

Personal logo Doms Decals Sponsoring Member of TMP05 Feb 2012 3:54 p.m. PST

No; the journey planner only works on timetabled stops; with the Skylink from Derby stopping at Donington Park, it's 5 minutes tops :-)

PeterAtJET05 Feb 2012 7:56 p.m. PST

Actually, the public transport to Castle Donnington looks better than it was was to the University from the town centre, given that the Skylink runs 7-days a week, unlike the University shuttle bus.

But it does need a decent map, that shows the Exhibition Centre

Goose66606 Feb 2012 2:44 a.m. PST

A good map would be handy indeed. Also what are the food and drink costs are like? Exhibition centres tend to be bl**dy pricy!

Rather spend my money on figures, than lunch.

Thomas Mante01 Oct 2012 2:28 a.m. PST

Derby will be interesting this year given it is not in Derby! I do wonder what prompted the choice of venue, was the Derby Conference Centre not available or too expensive or indeed just not suitable? Fingers crossed for the show and new venue.

Jeremy Sutcliffe01 Oct 2012 12:14 p.m. PST

Well, I think I've sussed out a there and back from Manchester by rail/bus but it'll be a long day if I decide to do it.

AnthonyWB02 Oct 2012 2:02 p.m. PST

Thomas Mante

The answer to your question is in the first post in the second paragraph.

The university decided in their infinite wisdom that they no longer wanted to hire out the venue to non university events.

Thomas Mante02 Oct 2012 4:32 p.m. PST

AnthonyWB

I was wondering why The Derby Conference Centre:

had not been considered. This is NOT the same as the university.

Volleyfire03 Oct 2012 1:24 p.m. PST

Doesn't look big enough to me and way more expensive from the look of the decor and furnishings, without me bothering to peruse the pricelist.

NigelDavid03 Oct 2012 3:35 p.m. PST

We did consider The Derby Conference Centre and The Roundhouse, neither had sufficient space.

Nigel
