I read a lot of threads on TMP about "do you still play this game even though it's unsupported" and "why don't you play FoW ?" and "would you use figures that are 10 years old ?" and such themes.

And I picture a cadre of wargamers who are like the very sheep, herded by games manufacturer's into buying the hot new thing and dropping it as soon as the new hot thing arrives. And I wonder – is this a mental construct of my own, reflecting my prejuidices onto the posters of such threads, or is it a reality that can be observed ?

So, do wargaming sheep exist ? (I expect Irregular do some !)

Yes – I've seen them
Yes
Yes – I am one

If they did not exist, the neither would GW… [>:-)]

Seriously, if folks kept gaming with their outdated/outmoded/out of production miniatures, then GW's Warhammer games, along with MageKnight, and all of the other CMG's would have serious marketing issues, as no one would buy their stuff, except for new players. Their marketing strategy demands that people drop the old, for the new, or they would not continue to push out new products.

This applies to card games, as well. They exist because, in part, they rely on new products to come out, which 'change' the game. Eventually, they pretty much come out with 'new' games. Look at the booster games, where every player is required to buy a number of unopened booster packs, and play with only what they find in the new packs. Sadly, thousands of gamers really are just sheep. But it's all in the name of fun, and it's their money, to spend how they choose. You gotta love capitalism!… Cheers!

An early issue of WI had a games about herding sheep,

Sheep is such a harsh term

There are lots of people who follow fads, but gamers are certainly not unique in this (look at sports/fashion and music, for example)

RavenscraftCybernetics02 Feb 2012 7:00 p.m. PST

I am Spartacus!

Criticizing other folks for their choice of how they play with toy soldiers – faddish or otherwise – seems an odd way to make oneself feel superior.

SECURITY MINISTER CRITTER02 Feb 2012 7:12 p.m. PST

I'm often playing with 35 year old minis, so I'm not a sheep.

striker802 Feb 2012 8:05 p.m. PST

The correct term is sheeple, no need to insult the poor fuzzy critter by equateing humans with sheep.

Yes, sheeple exist everywhere why would gaming be any different.

I'll also point out we've all fallen into being a sheeple and will again, denying it just means you're either a liar or in denile.

Lentulus02 Feb 2012 8:46 p.m. PST

I don't actually know any.

Sergeant Paper02 Feb 2012 9:10 p.m. PST

I have a copy of the WI game with sheep herding. I plan to use it with my someday-to-be-started Legends of Araby campaign.

Coelacanth193802 Feb 2012 9:24 p.m. PST

I thought somebody had some sheep for sale….

Wolfprophet02 Feb 2012 10:34 p.m. PST

This is madness!

Yes, it would be – which is, I suppose, why I was questioning my mental construct that has been prompted by other people's threads.

Playing with toy soldiers never makes me feel superior to anyone – I just enjoy it.

SECURITY MINISTER CRITTER03 Feb 2012 3:43 a.m. PST

No I'm Sheepicus!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is madness!

What was your first clue?????????????

OldGrenadier Fezian03 Feb 2012 5:02 a.m. PST

I think this whole thread is pretty baaaahhhhhhd.

Dynaman878903 Feb 2012 5:07 a.m. PST

Baaaah.

As others said, it's their free time, then can do what they want with it.

Mr Elmo,

Ah yes, the old 'One Man And His Dice' game! A classic! I must dig that out now that I've just painted up a load of sheep! :o)

epturner03 Feb 2012 5:29 a.m. PST

I think if you're in Maine, a sheep might be your girlfriend/opponent.

"Most nights out are real cheap,
'specially if you've got a sheep,
…In Maine"

(sung to the tune of "Cocaine")

Sheep in wargaming, not just for the "sheep-skate" anymore

And if you do Dad's Army, you need a Sheep Diversion Platoon in tin hats.

Yes, I've seen them – but I aren't one. I play WRG 6th, 1776, Tactical Commander, GQI & II and a whole slew of other games that no longer exist. In fact, I prefer them.

bobblanchett03 Feb 2012 6:37 a.m. PST

GW are of course baaaaaaaaast&rds

taskforce5803 Feb 2012 6:44 a.m. PST

Warlord Games has a flock of sheep…

epturner03 Feb 2012 7:13 a.m. PST

But do they have a Flock of Seagulls?

Eric

NoLongerAMember03 Feb 2012 7:35 a.m. PST

I am not a sheeple, but I occasionally play one on TMP…

Few things on TMP annoy me more than those who bleat "This game is no longer supported!"

I still play 1776 occasionally. It came out on…1976? Good game, no support whatsoever.

An example of a game getting far too much "support" is any ancients game from the WRG stables.
I remember the "Letters fromn Phil" seminars the night before a tournament, where the various "Letters from Phil" had their postmarks compared to deetermine how to interpret his opaque language.
There is something very wrong when you have a WRG 7.5, or a DBA 3.0.
That is far too much support and hand-holding.

Pass the mint sauce.

Onion sauce is good too.

Nuttin' tastes as good as mutton.

Thorfin1103 Feb 2012 3:10 p.m. PST

I am a shepherd for real and would love a copy of the shepherding game! Which WI is the "One man and his dice" game in please?

Thorfin1103 Feb 2012 3:13 p.m. PST

As for wargaming animals, I am more of a Butterfly myself, randomly flitting from one (unfinished) project to another, rarely staying put for long.

Ron W DuBray03 Feb 2012 6:11 p.m. PST

yes there out there, gaming sheep that is, lots of them , I on the other hand still play very old rules and use minis that have been OOP for 20 years.
