So I have just finished painting the army of the Potomac from the fire and fury rules from the battle of Gettysburg. Thinking about starting to paint Grants army at Vicksburg, however not sure if I need another 5 Corps. So my question is which of the corps should I paint? Are there any one's that are better or more important then the rest? Also are there any major difference's in the uniforms or appearance that I should know about? Thanks |

McPherson's Corps is always a favorite, but questions of being a "better" corps are always open to interpretation. As to appearances, nearly all of them would have the standard sack coat and light blue trousers, but most of them would have prided themselves on not being as well kempt as the "paper collar" soldiers of the AOP. Lots of variety in hats and probably a greater percentage of blanket rolls. Hope that is what you are looking for. Billy Yank |

General MacPherson commanded The Army of the Tennessee at the time of his death. |

Variant suggestion. Personally, I like to include regiments from back home in my armies. While Grant moved down the Mississippi to attack Vicksburg with an army of western regiments, Nathaniel Banks moved north to attack Port Hudson with the 19th Army corps. This was largely composed of eastern regiments (including the 156th New York). It also had units from the Corps d'Afrique and the 1st and 3rd Louisiana Native Guard. A quick Google shows these regiments in frock coats and kepi. Port Hudson is not as well known as Vicksburg, though there was some severe fighting there. Just a thought. Grelber Note: McPherson commanded the 17th Army Corps at Vicksburg. When Grant went East, and Sherman took over the western armies, McPherson was moved up to command of the Army of the Tennessee. |

One of those regiments had Old Abe the American Bald Eagle as its mascot. I'd choose the Corps that had that regiment. Use lots of figures with brimmed hats instead of forage caps. |

In the Vicksburg Campaign, Grant's Army of the Tennessee originally consisted of: 13th Corps -- McClernand (later, during the siege, Ord) 15th Corps -- Sherman 16th Corps -- Hurlbut (left behind in West Tenn., but during the siege 3 divisions of it were sent down to Vicksburg as reinforcements). 17th Corps -- McPherson In addition to the divisions of the 16th Corps mentioned above, other reinforcements received once the siege began were: One division (8 regiments) from Missouri under Herron 9th Corps (2 divisions) under Parke My favorite would be Sherman's 15th Corps, which included the 13th U.S. (Regulars) of which Sherman was the colonel as well as being a major general of volunteers. 13th Corps divisions had 2 brigades each, 15th and 17th had 3 each. |
