I have almost finished painting my first bayyalion of 28mm Napoleonics, and now I am trying to figure out the size of the flags for the standard bearers. What would a reasonable length and width be for this scale? Also, what wire thickness would be best for the pole or should I use something else instead? In looking at other people's figures here and elsewhere on the Internet, it looks like the flags might be around 1" to 1.25" in height (width), and about the same in length, but I am not completely sure. Also, what is the best way to make them look realistically wavy-like as if they are blowing in the beeze? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance to everyone who responds.

Look at warflag.com Lots of info on scaling the flags to fit your troops

Actual size around 2 metres for most infantry standards-would equate to about 30 mm-so your 1 to 1.25 inches is pretty close.
My favoured material for flags is the foil from wine bottles, seems to be more difficult to get nowadays (or perhaps I am just drinking cheaper wine!)After painting and varnishing on the flat, it is possible to gently fold this to get a realistic appearance.

I have experimented with actual cloth, but weave is usually far too coarse for 28mm figures. I have used paper-especially if taking flags from Warflag or similar sites, but find it difficult to get the realistic folds.

Many figures have moulded flag poles-far too thick, but often difficult to cut away satisfactorily. Stiff wire is best option-model railway suppliers are often best source of this. End can be hammered and filed to produce realistic pike end. As or thickness-I would suggest around 1.0 to 1.5mm diameter (not sure what that is wire gauge) would give about the right scale thickness.

French Napoleonic standards were rather smaller than those of most other nations; still oversized flags generally look better than undersized! For most 28mm figures 1 to 1.25" square is usually about right.

When using paper flags, typically white glue is applied and then they are folded in half and "wrapped" around the flagpole at the crease. White the glue is wet, it is fairly easy to bend the flag into folds; this often looks more realistic if done more on the diagonal than straight up and down.

I typically use Floral wire, 16 gauge for most, sometimes 20 gauge for tight spots.

Depends on the nationality; the French ones are considerably smaller than the British ones that are supplied in every box of Victrix. For the record, the Victrix British ones are larger (slightly) than the Perry British ones too. Dean

I only use GMB flags for my Napoleonic 28mm units.

They are amazing and historically accurate in their relative sizes.

Contact Rick at The Flag Dude, his flags are second to none, truly spectacular………

Thank you to all of your replies. I know of Rick's flags, but the shipping costs added to the price of the flags is forcing me to lean towards the DIY flags.

I appreciate all of your help. I'll have to give it a try and see what happens. Worst I can do is waste a piece of paper a bit of printer ink and a small piece of wire.
